Williamsburg, KY- Aleksandar Mirkovic's tying goal in the 90' wasn't enough for the Patriots as they dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to #23 Bethel University on Sunday in Williamsburg. The loss snaps Cumberlands two game win-streak and moves them to 3-2-1 in Mid-South Conference play.
UC picks up the loss despite recording 14 shots to just 7 for the Wildcats. In the game, Cumberlands also doubled up Bethel on corner kick opportunities, noting 10 to just 4 for the Wildcats.
Though the Patriots carried the play early, Bethel got on the board first. In the 9' a Wildcat midfielder raced down the left side of the field and crossed the ball into the Patriots 18-yard box. A Bethel attacker found space between the UC defense and one-timed the ball into the left corner of the cage to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
In the 25'
Liam Healey found himself open on the edge of the Wildcats defensive box. While moving to his right, Healey tipped the ball to an open
Hrannar Magnusson. Magnusson was 15-yards out when he sent the ball just over the net after attempting a one-timer. Bethel took the 1-0 lead to the half.
Midway through the second half,
Sergio Infantes Castell found himself with a free kick opportunity. In the 22' a UC attacker was tripped up on the left edge of the Wildcats 18-yard box while trying to make an inside move. Infantes Castell used his right foot and sent a curving shot off of the crossbar behind the Bethel goaltender. The ball was cleared by a Wildcat defender to keep Bethel in the lead at 1-0.
Just a few minutes later,
Milan Stojanovic sent a reverse header just wide of the cage. The opportunity came off of an Infantes Castell corner kick.
Gabriel Figurski used his head to make first contact with the ball, sending it towards the back post. Sensing that the ball might be sailing wide, Stojanovic attempted to re-direct the ball. However, he sent it just past the nearside post. The Wildcats held the lead into the final minutes.
In the 90' Infantes Castell got one final chance to try and tie the game with a free kick opportunity. Standing in almost the same spot as he hit the crossbar earlier, Infantes Castell sent the ball into the Bethel defensive box. After a Figurski failed shot attempt, Mirkovic charged into the box and used his head to notch the ball into the yawning cage. For the freshman from Serbia, it's the first goal for Mirkovic in his Patriots career. The goal coming with just under 30 seconds left to play in the game. The Patriots ran the clock out and the teams headed to overtime.
In the extra frame, Infantes Castell would get a corner kick opportunity on the net, but it was stopped by the Bethel netminder. In the 7' of overtime, a Wildcat attacker was positioned on the left edge of the Patriots 18-yard box. The Bethel attacker sent a curling shot into the right-hand corner of the net to give BU the 2-1 overtime victory.
The Sunday's game was the second time this season that Cumberlands found themselves in overtime. Back on February 23, UC and Lindsey Wilson battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie.
The Patriots will be back on the field on Tuesday March 9, as they host Freed-Hardeman for a 4:30 PM matchup. Live stats for that game can be found
