Appiah's Goal Propels UC Past Freed-Hardeman

Williamsburg, KY- Stephen Appiah's second half tally lifted Cumberlands to a 1-0 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday in Williamsburg. The goal is Appiah's first as a Patriot and helps UC improve to 4-2-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

On the Cumberlands goal, Hrannar Magnusson picked up his first career point as he was credited with an assist. The win on Tuesday wraps-up the Patriots longest homestand of the season. Over the past four games, Cumberlands notched a 3-1 record while playing in Williamsburg.

The Patriots came out and controlled the play through the first half. Cumberlands recorded a total of six corner kicks to just one for Freed-Hardeman. Sergio Infantes Castell, who tallied an assist during UC's overtime thriller on Sunday, took five corner kicks for the Patriots in the first half.

Early in the first half, UC got the first opportunity. In the 10' Infantes Castell was on the left side of the Lions defensive box when he made a quick move to his left. Infantes Castell got free and fired a shot just wide of the net on the near side post. The game remained scoreless.

In the 33' Cumberlands got their best scoring chance of the first half. While on the right edge of the Lions 18-yard box, Joel Drewery made a perfect cross in. While facing away from the net, Rodrigo Riveros used his head to strike the ball into the left corner of the cage. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Riveros was called offside, and the goal was disallowed. The two teams played to a scoreless tie at the half.

During the early portion of the second half, Freed-Hardeman recorded their first shot on the cage. In the 61' a Lions attacker let a shot go from the middle of the field that was shut down by Patriots netminder Nathan Hart. It was one of two saves that Hart was forced to make on the day.

In the 74' Cumberlands finally broke the tie. While streaking down the left sideline, Magnusson used his left foot to send a cross into the Freed-Hardeman 18-yard box. Appiah jumped through the air and tipped the ball with his left foot off of the crossbar and into the net. On the play, the Lions goalkeeper tried to leap and swat the ball away, but it was placed perfectly in the upper corner.

With just 31 seconds to play in the game, a Lions attacker found some space and let a strike go from just 12-yards out. Hart positioned himself well and used his hands to punch the ball away from danger. The Patriots ran out the remaining time and held on for a 1-0 win.

For Hart, it's his first win and first shutout as a Patriot. The 1-0 victory is also Cumberlands third shutout on the season.

UC will be back in action on Sunday March 14, as they travel to Pikeville for a 4:30 PM start against the Bears.
