Williamsburg, KY – Three Patriots tallied at least five points in the game as the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team defeated (RV) Marian Friday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Patriots close out their regular season with a 12-0 mark, including a 6-0 record in conference play.
Bella Ricchiazzi led the way for Cumberlands with five goals, three assists and four ground balls.
Florence Andrieu and
Emily Heim tallied five points apiece, while
Rachel Leigh and
Carolina Johnson each finished with a hat trick.
Leigh also notched a career-high five caused turnovers in the game, while the trio of Leigh, Heim, and
Trinity Brown combined for 20 draw controls in the win.
Olivia McCarrell made three saves in the game, while
Hannah McWhorter made one save. The Patriots backline of
Kelly Webb,
Hannah Churchley,
Kenzie Rogers, and Brown combine to hold the Knights to 12-25 on clears.
The Patriots came out strong in the first half winning all 12 draw controls and outscoring Marian 12-0 over the first 30 minutes of action. Cumberlands came out strong as Johnson and Ricchiazzi each netted a goal in the first minute to give UC a 2-0 lead. A couple minutes later, Leigh connected with Heim for a goal and on the next Patriots possession Heim returned the favor as Leigh netted her first goal of the game to make it 4-0. Cumberlands defense continued to step up as McCarrell forced a turnover as Andrieu blocked the Knights first shot attempt, while the Cooper City, FL native connected with Ricchiazzi for a goal extending the lead to 5-0 with 19:33 remaining. UC added four more goals over the next ten minutes, including a pair of goals from Andrieu to make it 10-0. A few minutes later McCarrell recorded a save and on the ensuing transition Brown netted an unassisted goal to extend the lead. UC continue to apply the pressure and in the closing seconds of the first half Ricchiazzi connected with Heim for a goal to make it 12-0 at the break.
Marian came out strong in the second half winning the opening draw control and converting their possession into a goal. A
Stephanie Meyer goal two minutes later sparked a 4-0 run for the Patriots, which saw goals from Brown, Johnson, and Ricchiazzi. For Johnson, it was her third goal of the game for her first collegiate hattrick. Leigh added a free position goal, before Heim connected with Meyer for a goal give Cumberlands an 18-1 lead with 17:09 remaining. Marian closed out the game netting four of the final five goals of the contest for the 19-5 final.
The win marks the Patriots first undefeated regular season in program history as the UC extends their win streak to a program-best mark of 20.
Cumberlands will return to the field Thursday, April 22, when they face Webber in the quarterfinals of the MSC Tournament, which takes place at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The game is set to start at 11 a.m. with live video available
