Waleska, GA – Facing top-ranked Reinhardt for the third consecutive year in the AAC tournament championship, the Patriots played stifling defense but ultimately fell 10-3 Saturday afternoon. The Patriots move to 7-6 on the season and now await the announcement of the NAIA tournament field on Sunday, April 25.
The Patriots defense held the Eagles, who came into the game averaging 24 gpg in April, to their lowest offensive output of the season. Leading the way for UC was
Michael Toohey, who made a career-high 17 saves in cage.
Dylan Crouch netted a goal and forced four caused turnovers, while
Christian Vanover tallied a goal and an assist in the game.
Both team came out strong defensively as Toohey made three saves over the first five minutes of the game to keep the game scoreless. The Patriots continued to play solid defense throughout the quarter, however, couldn't get the offensive going as they trailed 4-0 after the first quarter.
Cumberlands stellar defensive continued into the second quarter as Toohey notched three more saves in the opening five minutes. UC got the offense going as Stephan Popovich scooped a ground ball and connected with Crouch for a goal to cut it to 4-1. Reinhardt added a goal a minute later. Cumberlands looked to cut into the deficit, dominating the possession over the next five minutes of play, however, struggled to convert shots into goals as they went into the break trailing 5-1.
Reinhardt added a pair of goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 7-1. In the fourth quarter, Vanover found Coltran for a goal to cut the deficit to 7-2 with 10:46 remaining. Vanover added a goal at the 7:24 mark as the Eagles tallied three of the final four goals in the game for the 10-3 final
Toohey's 17 saves are second most in program history and it's the first time since March 10, 2019 that a goalie tallied at least 17 saves in a game
