Box Score Savannah, GA – Thomas Fogarty tied a program record with seven goals as the #6 Patriots men's lacrosse team netted seven of the final eight goals to knock off #3 Columbia 18-12 Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. With the win the Patriots improve to 8-6 on the year and advance to the semifinals of the NAIA Invitational.
Fogarty finished with seven goals, tying Phil Procida for most goals in a game, an assists and two caused turnovers in the game.
Dylan Crouch added seven points with four goals and three assists, while
Christian Vanover tallied six points.
Tanner Popovich netted a hat trick in the win.
Defensively, UC was led by
Michael Toohey's 12 saves in the cage, nine of which came in the second half.
Jake Morgan notched a pair of caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls.
Jayvon Jamison went 17-26 on faceoffs and scooped a career-high 10 ground balls in the win.
Columbia struck first with a pair of goals in the first give minutes. Fogarty put UC on the board with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 with 8:33 remaining. Jamison won the ensuing faceoff and on the Patriots possession Vanover converted the equalizer to make it 2-2. The two teams traded goals before Crouch put a well-placed shot into the cage giving Cumberlands a 4-3 edge. The Cougars added a goal in the final minute to tie the game 4-4 after the first quarter.
Crouch connected with Fogarty for a goal before netting a man-up goal of his own to put Cumberlands in front 6-5 midway through the second half. Columbia added a pair of goals, however, the Patriots responded with a three goal run of their own, over a two minute span. Fogarty netted two of those goals, while
Chrystian Coleman found Crouch for the other as UC took a 9-8 lead into the break.
The Cougars looked to retake the lead in the third quarter, however, Toohey made five stops in the first ten minutes of the period. Offensively,
Anthony Gray connected with Crouch for the goal, before
Tanner Popovich converted an unassisted goal giving the Patriots an 11-10 lead heading into the final quarter.
The two teams traded possession to open the fourth quarter as Columbia found their equalizer at the 11:15 mark. On the next possession, Morgan forced a turnover,
Dalton Smith scooped the ground ball and led the transition which resulted in Vanover finding Fogarty for the go-ahead goal. Fogarty and Vanover each added a goal over the next two minutes extending the lead to 14-11 with 9:23 remaining. Cumberlands netted the final four goals of the game, from four different Patriots, as UC held on the 18-12 final.
The Patriots advance to the NAIA semifinals for the third time in program history and will face the winner of #2 Indiana Tech vs. #7 Benedictine Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m.
