Williamsburg, KY – Freshman standout
Olivia McCarrell made a career-high 15 saves to lead the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team to a 13-5 win over tenth-ranked Georgetown Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, UC improves to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in MSC play, while Georgetown moves to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
In addition to her 15 saves, McCarrell also scooped five ground balls, which was tied for the team high.
Emily Heim netted a season-high five goals to go along with five draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Ricchiazzi added six points and five ground balls.
Rachel Leigh accumulated her seventh hattrick of the season.
Both teams struggled to get their offensive rhythm going early in the game, however, Georgetown netted two of the first three goals of the contest to take a 2-1 lead eight minutes in. UC looked to even the score as Heim was looking for Ricchiazzi instead sent a shot into the back of the cage to tie the game at 2-2 with 19:28 left. McCarrell made four stops over the next nine minutes, until Ricchiazzi connected on a free position goal to put UC in front 3-2. The Patriots added three more free position goals from Ricchiazzi and Heim to extend their lead to 6-2, before the Tigers scored a transition goal right before half sending the teams into the lockerroom with UC leading 6-3.
The Patriots opened the second half with three straight saves from McCarrell, while Heim put a well-placed shot into the cage to extend UC's lead to 7-3. The two teams traded goals before
Tasie Fox connected with Heim for her fifth goal of the game. Ricchiazzi won the ensuing draw control and found Fox for a goal 32 seconds later extended the lead to 10-4 with 19:02 left. After a Georgetown goal, Fox dished out her second assist to Leigh as she netted two of UC's final three goals. The Seymour, TN native McCarrell added five saves over the final eight minutes of the game for the 13-7 final.
Cumberlands will return to the field Friday, April 9, when they travel to Marietta, GA to face seventh-ranked Life in a non-conference game. The game is set to start at 5:10 p.m. with live video available
