Box Score Marietta, GA – For the second straight game, goalie
Olivia McCarrell recorded 15 saves, while
Emily Heim tallied five points to lead the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over seventh-ranked Life Friday night. With the win, UC improves to 10-0 overall, while the Running Eagles move to 8-5.
In addition to her 15 saves, McCarrell also scooped four ground balls, which was tied for the team high. Heim tallied three goals, two assists, and three ground balls in the win. It marks the sixth time that the senior has netted at least three goals in a game.
Bella Ricchiazzi added three points, while
Rachel Leigh,
Stephanie Meyer and
Florence Andrieu each added two points.
Trinity Brown and Leigh also notch a pair of caused turnovers in the win.
It was a defensive battle over the first five minutes of the game keeping the game scoreless. Life converted a man-up free position goal to take the early lead. The Running Eagles looked to extend their lead, however, McCarrell made a pair of saves, the second of which led to a transition goal by
Trinity Brown to even the score with 23:23 left. Both teams continued to struggle offensively until
Florence Andrieu netted an unassisted goal to even the score at 2-2. That goal sparked UC's offense as Heim and
Rachel Leigh each scored within a one minute span to take a 4-2 edge with 8:25 remaining. Life closed out the first half with three unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead at the break.
The Patriots wasted no time to tie the game as Heim won the opening draw control of the second half and connected with Leigh for a goal 18 seconds in. Another stop by McCarrell led to Ricchiazzi find Andrieu in front of the cage for a goal putting Cumberlands in front 6-5. The two teams traded goals twice, before Heim converted a free position goal midway through the second half extending the lead to 9-7.
Carolina Johnson and Heim each found the back of the cage while McCarrell made five stops over the last 15 minutes of the game for the 11-9 final.
For the Patriots it's their sixth win over a team that is either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top 10 poll this season.
Cumberlands will return to the field Thursday, April 15, when they host (RV) Marian at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The game is set to start at 12 p.m. with live video available
