Patriots Sweep Asbury in Home Opener

Williamsburg, KY – Four Patriots record season-high as Cumberlands walk away victorious beating Asbury 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-21) in their home opener Wednesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym.

UC was led by Anna Blumeier who came away with 14 kills, Shelby Lackey matched her season-high with nine kills, and Camryn Wells set a career-high with five kills. Lexi Lester set a season high of 28 assists and tied her career-high in kills with three. Juliet Banks came away with 14 digs, Allyson Grava added 11, and Kendall Arnold added eight.

In the first set UC jumped out to an early lead start by a kill from Blumeier and Lackey.  Lester added two aces to push the lead to 10-3. This forced an Eagles timeout to try and slow down the UC offense, but it did not work. After the timeout, Blumeier notched back-to-back kills and Grava and Wells added kills of their own. Four straight kills from Lackey gave UC set point, and Lester finished the set with a kill.

In the second set two aces and a kill from Blumeier, along with an ace from Lester gave UC an 8-5 lead and they never looked back. After a score by the Eagles, three kills by Blemeier and an ace by Lackey ended the set 25-11.

The third set was not much different for the Patriots, jumping out to a 15-7 lead. Two back-to-back errors by the Eagles and a kill from Lackey extended the lead to double digits. From that Lackey added an ace and two more kills from Blumeier retired the Eagles 25-11.

Head Coach Kathryn Hart said, "I am so proud of this group. They did not let the new lineup or positions faze how they approached the game". She also added that she is "Looking forward to what we can accomplish this season".

The Patriots volleyball team move to 6-3 on the season and have their next match at home on Saturday September 4, against Tennessee Wesleyan at 2 pm. For Live Video click here. For live stats click here.
