Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots found themselves down twice in the game against (RV) West Virginia Tech. The team was able to overcome the deficit once, but unable to a second time, falling to the Golden Bears 2-1.
Liam Healey was the lone goal scorer for Cumberlands, netting his first goal of the season and UC's sixth overall.
Neither team got on the scoresheet in the opening 45 minutes, but UC led WVUT 6-5 on shots.
Ingmar Struck kept the Golden Bears out of the net making three saves in the first half. In the 6' West Virginia Tech had a chance and sent the ball in for a header but Struck collected it.
Not even 10 minutes later, WVUT had another opportunity on the goal. The ball got played out to the left side of the field to a Golden Bear. The attacker shot the ball and Struck once again gathered the ball, keeping it from going in the net.
In the 17', West Virginia Tech had a breakaway chance that forced Struck to come off his line, the forward hit the ball towards the right side of the goal, but the freshman goalkeeper kicked out his leg to push the ball away.
The Patriots recorded just one shot on goal in the 33
rd minute of play.
Rodrigo Riveros had the ball in the center of the pitch and trying to catch goalkeeper off his line he fired a shot, but the WVUT keeper made the save to keep it level into the halftime break.
In the second half, a shot was not issued by either team until the Golden Bears found the back of the net in the 60
th minute. A ball was played into the box that had Struck come off his line once again, however this time the attacker got around Struck and kicked the ball into the net to give West Virginia Tech the 1-0 lead.
Cumberlands did not have to wait long to find their equalizer. A foul occurred in favor of the Patriots on the left side of the field, outside the box. Healey lined up to take the kick and bent the ball into the left corner of the goal, past the keeper to tie it 1-1.
The goals following in succession happened once again, with the Golden Bears scoring five minutes after UC's equalizer. WVUT had the ball on the left flank, and they crossed it into the box where their attacker slotted it into the net for the 2-1 advantage.
The Patriots tried to find the equalizer the remainder of the game, firing off four more shots in the final 20 minutes, unfortunately they could not find the tying goal.
The loss moves UC to a 1-2-1 record on the year and pushes the Golden Bears to 3-2.
Cumberlands will be back in action on Saturday, September 18 when they host Dalton State at 5PM. Live video for the match can be found
