Patriots Battle Back to Tie #15 Dalton State 3-3

Williamsburg, KY – After finding themselves down 2-0, #12 Cumberlands fought back to eventually tie #15 Dalton State 3-3 in double overtime.

Rodrigo Riveros earned the brace for the Patriots while Gabriel Figurski Vieira found the equalizer for his first goal of the year.

The opening half was full of plenty of offensive chances  for UC who recorded nine shots with six on frame. However, it was Dalton State who got on the scoreboard first. Off their first corner kick of the match, the Roadrunners were able to score off a header to go up 1-0 in the 32nd minute. Ingmar Struck made sure to keep UC in the game, recording three saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The lone goal from DSC was the only one in the first half. The Roadrunners then built onto their lead in the second half with a goal in the 62 'to go ahead 2-0. The two-goal advantage ignited UC's offense to put the ball in the back of the net.

A minute after the Roadrunner's second goal, the Patriots had a free kick just past the midfield line. Joel Drewery took the free kick sending the ball to the far post where Figurski Vieira headed the ball across the frame. The ball went right to Riveros who knocked the ball into the goal, shrinking Dalton State's lead to 2-1.

The equalizer for UC was just three minutes later in the 65th minute. Drewery once again kickstarted the Cumberlands' offense. The senior dribbled into the middle of the pitch forcing Dalton State to put pressure on him Drewery played the ball out wide to Riveros, who slotted the ball into the left side of the net to tie the game at two a piece.

The goal frenzy continued, this time by the Roadrunners in the 67th minute. Dalton State had the ball in their offensive half. They fired a shot that was blocked, however they stayed with the play and were able to finish the follow up shot to go up 3-2.

Once again, the deficit did not derail UC, who tied the game in the 73' minute off another free kick. This time Liam Healey took the opportunity outside the box on the left side. He curled the ball to the back post where Figurski Vieira was at to push the ball across the endline tying it up at three.

The three goals in the second half were the only shots UC had in that period and they recorded just two more in the game, both in the second overtime period. Dalton State had just four shots in the second period and then only three in the first overtime period.

Since neither team was able to push across a goal in the overtime period the game ended in a 3-3 draw. This marks the third double overtime game for the Patriots who are now 0-1-2 in those contests. With Drewery's two assists in the game it marks the seventh of his career and the multi-goal game for Riveros is the fourth of his career.

Overall UC is ow 1-2-2 while DSC is now 3-2-1. The game is the final non-conference game of the season for the Patriots who will have their final 11 matches against Mid-South Conference opponents.

The first MSC opponent will be the Cumberland Phoenix, who UC will travel to on Tuesday, September 21. Kick-off is set for 4PM with live video here and live stats here.
