Williamsburg, KY – After posting career weeks for their respective teams, middle Emily Prewitt and lineman Kumi Sarpong Jr. have been selected as the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, announced by the athletic department Monday.
Prewitt was named the female athlete of the week after recording 13 kills, three digs, and two blocks in the Patriots 3-0 sweep over Freed-Hardeman. Prewitt was on fire for UC with her 13 kills being the most in a three-set match to help Cumberlands extend their win streak to 16 consecutive sets and six straight match wins. The junior hit .650 on the day with no errors on 20 total attacks to lead the Patriot offense. It was the second time in the Corbin, KY native hit over .600 in a match.
Sarpong earned the male athlete of the week honors after tallying a career-high 3.5 sacks and five tackles in UC's 56-12 win over Florida Memorial. The Grayson, GA native was unstoppable in UC's first road game of the season disrupting the Lions offense. Sarpong Jr. 3.5 sacks resulted in a loss of 39 yards for Florida Memorial. Additional two of his sacks came on fourth down plays, which halted Lions scoring opportunities. Sarpong Jr. was part of the Patriots defense that held Florida Memorial to just 12 points and 3.8 yards per play.
