Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | UC Athletics

Cumberlands Comes Up Just Short in MSC Opening Game

Murfreesboro, TN – For the first Mid-South Conference match of the season, the Patriots traveled to face the Phoenix of Cumberland U. Despite getting out to an early lead, UC lost 2-1 falling to 1-3-2 on the season.

Both of the UC goals were first career goals, one going to Shuma Sasaki and the second to Storm Hollensted. Also, Joachim Blomsterberg earned his first career point in a Patriot uniform, tallying an assist on the opening goal.

The Patriots got off to a blistering start, tallying their earliest goal of the season. In the 3' minute, Blomsterberg played the ball up the field to Sasaki. The freshman attacker notched his first of the season by sending in the shot from the far right, well outside the 18-yard box, knocking the ball off the left post and into the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

In the 12th minute the Phoenix found the equalizer. They were awarded a corner kick on the left side of the field. The ball was sent into the box and shot into the goal to tie it up at one a piece. Each team got off just one more shot on goal, but were unable to find the net, leading to the tie into halftime.

Just seven minutes into the second half, the Patriots found themselves down a man for the remainder of the game after being issued a red card. Right after the card, the Phoenix fired off four shots within a minute, but were all blocked by the UC defense. However, in the 53rd minute a handball in Cumberlands' defensive box was called, giving the Phoenix a penalty kick which they converted to go up 2-1.

UC weathered much of the storm, only allowing one more shot on goal for Cumberland U. The shot did prove to be effective, since it was put into the net to give CU the 3-2 lead in the 80th minute.

But the Patriots never looked down and continued to fight late in the game. UC kept pushing forward and in the 82nd minute they converted their chance. Tommaso Ogliari had the ball on the left flank, he crossed the ball across the field to Bruno Benitez who then beat a Phoenix defender in the box. Benitez slotted the ball across the box to Hollensted, for the perfectly timed run resulting in a UC goal. With the score at 3-2, UC kept looking for their equalizer, but their final two shots were blocked and saved giving CU the win.

Cumberlands will look to regroup for their game on Saturday against MSC opponent, UT Southern for another game in the Volunteer State. The match is set to kick-off at 5:30PM with live video found here and live stats here.
