Patriots Rally Comes Up Short as Chapman Reaches Milestone

Williamsburg, KY – Lily Chapman 22 kills was not enough as the Patriots fall to the Saints 1-3 (23-25, 16-25, 25-19, 24-26). Chapman was the bright spot for the Patriot as she surpasses the 1000 kill mark. Coming into the day she only needed 11 kills to push her past 1000. She became the sixth Patriot to reach that mark.

In addition to Chapman's 22 kills, she came away with 12 digs. Shelby Lackey also added 10 kills, three aces and five blocks, while Anna Blumeier added seven kills, two aces, and 15 digs. Lexi Lester led the passing game with 21 assists, and Savanah Schwarz added 19. Juliet Banks let the team in digs coming away with 26.

Cumberlands came out strong starting the first set 9-5, featuring kills from Blumeier, Emily Prewitt, and Camryn Wells. The Saints responded with a 15-4 run to get the lead to 20-13. UC was able to tie the set at 23, off two kills by Chapman, and kills from Blumeier, Lackey, and Danielle Jackson. Thomas More was able to edge out the set one win 25-23. The Saints used their momentum to take set two 25-16.

UC rebounded in set three. Wells got the Patriots offense started with a kill. Chapman then notched two kills of her own. Blumeier got in on the action to take a four-point lead. After two UC errors, Prewitt, Olivia Verdecchia, and Chapman put in kills. That kill put Lily at 998 kills. After aces from Blumeier and Lackey, Chapman put in back-to-back kills which got her to the 1000 mark. The momentum from that moment caused a UC run that finished the set 25-19.

Set four was tightly contested the whole way. UC tailed by two, 14-12, when Lackey notched an ace. Two errors from UC gave the Saints a three-point lead. But back-to-back kills from Chapman kept UC close. Then Verdecchia and Lackey put in back-to-back kills as well, to keep UC within three points. A kill from Chapman and an ace from Lackey tied the set at 23-23. The Saints got a kill to take the lead, then Chapman knotted it back up at 24 with a kill. From there Thomas More got back-to-back kills to end the set 26-24.

Head Coach Kathryn Hart had this to say "I am so proud of Lily for reaching this milestone. I wish the overall outcome of the day was different, but we are headed down the right path and will continue to work hard and improve."

The Patriots are now 8-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. UC is back on the road as they head to Georgetown, KY on Thursday September 23 to take on Georgetown College at 6:30 pm. For live stats click here.
