Georgetown, KY – UC takes down the Tigers in four sets winning 3-1 (25-16, 13-25, 31-29, 25-23). This win marks the third time the Patriots were able to get a win at Georgetown. The last time was a 3-1 win on September 17, 2019, and before that was a 3-2 win on October 11, 2016.
The Patriots offense was led by
Lily Chapman who came away with 16 kills and 12 digs.
Shelby Lackey added 13 kills, while
Anna Blumeier added eight kills, and 12 digs.
Savanah Schwarz and
Lexi Lester shared the passing load, with Schwarz having 25 and Lester having 20 with 13 digs. Along with the 25 assists Schwarz had a game high of three aces.
Juliet Banks led the Patriots in digs notching 28 of them.
UC dominated the first set taking it 25-16. Chapman got the offense rolling notched the first of her six kills in the set.
Danielle Jackson put in a kill off a pass from Lester. Chapman then went on a 4-1 run off of passes from Lester and Schwarz. Georgetown was forced to take a timeout. After the timeout UC offense kept the ball rolling going on a 9-2 run, featuring kills from
Emily Prewitt, Lackey, and Blumeier. During the run Jackson also came away with a block. Then
Olivia Verdecchia and Prewitt came away with kills to push the lead to double figures. The set ended on a kill from Lackey.
The Patriots fell in set two, 13-25. But rebounded to take set three, 31-29. Set three was tightly contested the whole way through, going back and forth with each team exchanging runs. At 19 -18, Jackson put in a kill to give UC a two-point lead 20-18. The Tigers went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 24-20, forcing Coach
Kathryn Hart to call timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Tigers had back-to-back errors, then
Allyson Grava was able to tie the set with back-to-back aces. A kill from Schwarz off an
Ashley Sobocinski assist gave UC a 25-24 lead. From there the Tigers came away with two kills to regain the lead. Prewitt blocked an attack to tie the game at 26-26. Then a UC error gave the Tigers the lead, but a kill by Chapman was able to tie the set at 27-27. Lackey was able to get the last kill of the set for UC, the set ended on back-to-back errors by the Tigers.
Chapman got the fourth set started with a kill. Followed by a kill from Verdecchia and an ace from Schwarz. After a few errors, two kills by Blumeier and one from Lackey gave the Patriots a 7-4 lead. Banks added to the lead with an ace. The Tigers then went on a 6-1 run. Verdecchia ended the run with a kill off a Banks assist. Later in the set Lackey put in three kills to give UC a 21-16 lead. A kill from Chapman and an error from the Tigers gave UC set point. After a timeout by the Patriots, Verdecchia retired the Tigers with a kill, 25-23.
The Patriots move to 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. UC returns home on Saturday September 25 as they take on Pikeville at 2 pm. For live video click
