Lockdown Defense Propels the Patriots to First MSC Win of the Season

Pulaski, TN – Finding themselves in another close contest, Cumberlands was able to come out as the victors against UT Southern. UC won 1-0 to improve their season record to 2-3-2 and MSC record to 1-1.

Joachim Blomsterberg was the lone goal scorer for the Patriots, giving him his first of his young career. The Coppenhagen, Denmark native tallied an assist in UC's last game against Cumberland U giving him points in back-to-back contests.

The opening half had a lot of scoring chances for the Firehawks, including seven corner kicks, but the UC defense was up to the task, warding off six shots from UT Southern. UC had three shots of their own, but could not convert any as well.
In the final five minutes in the opening half, Stephen Appiah had a great chance on goal, but his shot hit the crossbar keeping the game level into halftime.

The break was just what UC needed to push forward their offense. Hrannar Magnusson had a cross blocked that rolled across the endline giving the Patriots a corner kick on the left side. Liam Healey took the corner kick and sent it to the middle of the six-yard box right to Bomsterberg. The freshman used his 6'4" frame to rise above the Firehawk defenders and head the ball into the net to put UC up 1-0.

Nathan Hart was instrumental for Cumberlands, making his first start between the posts this season. The senior had five saves across the 90-minute game, marking the most in his Patriot career for a single contest.

Hart had to make a save in the 89' to preserve the win. The Firehawks were on the attack looking for the equalizer. They passed the ball around the 18-yard box and then lobbed a ball heading for the far-left side of the net, but Hart reached up to stop the ball from crossing the line. UT Southern could not earn a goal and fell to UC, 1-0.

The one goal difference continues the streak of every game this season being decided by one goal or less for UC. Not allowing a goal for the Firehawks, marks the first shutout of the season for the Patriots.

Cumberlands will return home for a pair of contests in Williamsburg, KY, starting with a game on September 28 against Campbellsville. The game is slated for a 5PM kick-off at the UC Soccer Complex with live video found here and live stats here.
