Murfreesboro, TN- Playing in their first conference game of the season, the Patriots were able to hold off a strong effort by #20 Cumberland University to tie 1-1 after 110 minutes of play.
Cumberland University started the match putting a lot of pressure on the UC defense. Throughout the contest, the Phoenix were able to out shoot the Patriots 25-14. Despite giving up the one goal late in the second half,
Georgia Martell played excellent in the cage for the Patriots. She made a total of eight saves, including a couple of diving stops in the 58
th and 68
th minute, to hold the Phoenix to only one goal in the match.
The lone goal for Cumberlands came in the 52
nd minute of the match after the Phoenix committed a foul just to the right of the goalie box.
Olaya Blanco chipped the free kick towards the opposite goal post, and
Jayden Boelter was able to head the ball into the left side of the net. Boelter now has scored in five of the first seven matches that UC has played in. She is currently averaging one goal per game, and is leading all players within the Mid-South Conference with seven goals on the year.
The Phoenix were able to tie the game in the 83
rd minute of the game. After the Patriots committed a foul outside of the goalie box, a Phoenix forward was able shoot the ball just past a diving Martell to notch the game up at one.
Neither team was able to find the golden goal in overtime resulting in a 1-1 tie. The Patriots improve their unbeaten streak in MSC opening matches to four, dating back to 2018.
UC is set to travel down to Pulaski, TN Saturday, September 25, to face off against #3 ranked University of Tennessee Southern. Kickoff is set for 3 PM, and the match can be live streamed
