Patriots Suffer First Loss to #3 Tennessee Southern

Pulaski, TN- The #5 ranked University of the Cumberlands competed in their first top-five matchup of the season against #3 University of Tennessee Southern. The Patriots suffered their first loss of the season to the Firehawks by a score of 3-1.

Throughout the match UC's offense, who was averaging 14.6 shots per game before this match, was limited to only five shots. Only two of those shots were on goal.

The Patriots were able to take the lead late in the late in the first half. In the 31st minute of the match, Cumberlands was granted a corner kick on the right side of the field. Sarah Hammerstone sent the corner to the opposite side of the goalie box. Jayden Boelter was able to connect with the cross and send it past the diving Tennessee Southern goalie. This is Boelter's eighth goal in as many matches for the Patriots. In the 34th minute of the match, Tennessee Southern was able to tie the game up at one goal each. The Firehawks would take the lead in the 38th minute of the first half off of a shot from outside the goalie box.

Tennessee Southern controlled most of the possession throughout the second half. The Patriots were limited to just one shot in the second half, despite averaging over 14 shots per game on the season. The Firehawks would extend their lead in the 85th minute of the match to go up on UC 3-1.

This is Cumberlands first off of the season, despite scoring first against the #3 ranked team. This is UC's first loss of the season and also the first time their defense has given up more than one goal in a game.

The Patriot defense was able to hold a strong Firehawks offense to 16 shots during the match. Tennessee Southern has been averaging over 19 shots per game. Laura Vogt had a career day in the cage, despite suffering the loss. Against the #3 team in the country, Vogt was able to make eight saves, which is the most saves she has made in a single game for Cumberlands.

UC is set to return home on Tuesday, September 28, to face off against Campbellsville University. Kickoff is set for 5 PM at the UC Soccer Complex and the match can be live streamed here.
