Williamsburg, KY – The UC archery team notched ten gold medals and 23 podium finishes to run away from the competition and win their fifth consecutive Mid-South Conference 3D Championship Saturday afternoon at the UC All-Purpose Field. The Patriots become the first team to score over 200 points in the 3D Championship as they tallied 205 points to win the event by 55 points.
"I am thrilled with the performances throughout the championships as this team continued to battle and never let anything stop them from achieving their mission," said Head Coach
Kris Strebeck. "What's most impressive is that it was a complete team effort as both returners and newcomers played vital roles in today's success."
The individual shoot-downs in the morning saw Cumberlands capture five gold medals to give the Patriots the early lead and they never looked back.
Katie Karr opened the day for UC taking the led in the second end of the women's bare bow competition and three straight tens gave the senior her first conference title as Patriot as she finished with a 46.
Cumberlands had a trio of men's barebow archers score points led by sophomore
Elijah Crawford. Crawford hit 10 or higher in four of his six shots to finish with a 55 to take the top podium spot by five points. Teammate
Ty Pennington placed won the shoot-off to earn the bronze medal, while
Tyler Woosley placed second in the shoot-off to earn five points for Cumberlands.
The women's bowhunter division marked the second time that UC placed a pair on the podium. The reigning MSC Shooter of the Year,
Madison Cox, picked up right where she left off successfully defending her 3D title. The junior drilled a pair of bonus rings en route to a 64, giving her a four-shot win. Teammate
Kaitlyn Shields tallied a second to finish in a three-way tie for second place and after a shoot-off ended up taking home the bronze medal.
The Patriots earned both gold medals in the compound division taking top honors in both individual shoot-downs.
Hannah Moose, the top-seed heading into the day, hit three bonus rings to pull away from the field and win gold. Teammate
Brooke Miller overcame a slow start and closed out her round with three consecutive 14's to reach the podium and earn the bronze medal.
In men's compound,
Jase Boils utilized his experience hitting four bonus rings, including back-to-back 14's to close out the round as he became the MSC champion. Boils entered as the fifth seed in his fourth conference shoot-down and fended off the late charge by the field.
UC notched a pair of podium finishes in the recurve division as
Jacob Valentini carded a 58 to finish in a three-way tie for first, however, a shoot-off left the senior with a silver medal. Top-seed
Ceridwyn Salyers carded a 12 on her final shot to record her first podium finish notching a bronze medal in women's recurve.
Hunter Larese led a pair of Patriot men's bowhunter with a runner-up finish. Larese carded a 66 to earn eight points for the team, while
Elliott Cross added five points after shooting a 54 on the day to place fourth.
Taking a lead into the team rounds, UC didn't let up as they earned five gold medals and tallied podium finishes in all 12 team divisions. One of the closest finishes of the afternoon came in the mixed recurve team rounds as Cumberlands faced Lindsey Wilson in the championship match. The two teams were even after the second end forcing a one arrow shoot-off, which the Blue Raider put a mark of 11/16" away from center. Valentini stepped up a drilled the perfect shot, which was 1/16" away from the center giving UC the gold medal.
The duo of Cox and Cross continued their dominance in the mixed bowhunter as they went 2-0 with a 124-109 win over the Blue Raiders in the gold medal match. Cumberlands added a silver in the mixed barebow division and a bronze in the mixed compound division to extend their lead overall.
UC's trio of
Tyler Woosley,
Elijah Crawford, and
Ty Pennington dominated in the men's barebow gold medal match defeating Lindsey Wilson 137-116 to claim the top podium spot.
Cumberlands added another gold in the women's recurve team round. The top-seed notched a 24-point win over Lindsey Wilson in the final spot to take home the gold medal.
Hannah Moose,
Brooke Miller, and
Marissa Harding closed out the day with a 186-160 win over Lindsey Wilson in the semifinals, before knocking off Pikeville 186-177 in the championship match to give the Patriots its final gold medal of the tournament.
The Patriots added three more silvers and a bronze medal during the team rounds to finish out the scoring.
Lindsey Wilson finished in second with 150 points, while Pikeville placed third with 111 points.
Cumberlands earns ten points in the overall conference standings, which decides the overall conference championships. The Patriots will look to extend their lead during the indoor and outdoor conference championships.
UC will now shift its focus on the USA Archery 3D Nationals, taking place October 14-17 in Foley, AL. Cumberlands is seeking its fourth consecutive 3D national championship.
