Williamsburg, KY- In the first home Mid-South Conference match of the season, the #5 Patriots fell to RV Campbellsville 2-1 on Tuesday. Cumberlands had the lead early, but the Tigers were able to score two goals in the second half to give UC their second straight loss of the season.
Jayden Boelter continues to be the offensive leader for the Patriots. In nine games, Boelter has scored nine goals total to keep her goals per game average at 1.00.
Campbellsville's offense put a lot of pressure on the UC defense throughout the entire 90 minutes of play. The Tigers out-shot Cumberlands 13-3 during the game, and 2 of the Patriots three shots came late in the second half. The Patriots were able to take control of one Tiger turnover and turn it into a goal scoring opportunity. In the 23
rd minute of the match,
Laura Navajas Marin won a ball from a Tiger forward and was able to send it up to a wide open
Sarah Hammerstone. Hammerstone would then take a couple dribbles before floating a ball up to Boelter to the left side of the goal box. Boelter was able to send a shot just to the right of the Tiger goalie to give the Patriots the lead halfway through the first half.
The second half was controlled mostly by the Tiger offense. In the 52
nd minute of the match, Campbellsville was able to get the equalizer off of a tough shot by a Tiger forward. In the 54
th minute of the game, hard foul in the goalie box gave the Tigers a penalty kick in the box. A Campbellsville forward would send a shot past a diving
Georgia Martell to get the go-ahead goal early in the second half. Cumberlands only had a couple of chances to find the equalizer late in the second half.
Olaya Blanco was able get off both shots for the Patriots, but her first shot went high and her second shot was saved by the Tiger goalie. This is the second straight loss in which UC has gone ahead early and has not been able to hold onto the lead.
With her assist, Navajas now moves into fourth all-time in the Patriots women's soccer record book for career assists.
Cumberlands looks to bounce back on Saturday in another Top-20 matchup. UC is set to host Lindsey Wilson in Williamsburg, KY with kickoff set for 12 PM. The match can be live streamed
