Williamsburg, KY – Lily Chapman notched her fourth double-double, including a season-high 17 digs as Cumberlands take down Shawnee State 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22) Wednesday night in the UC Volleyball Gym. The Patriots extend their win streak to four and improves to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
On a day where everyone on the team played and contributed, UC was led by
Lily Chapman who had a great all-around game as she notched 21 kills while adding 17 digs, and an ace.
Shelby Lackey added 10 kills and she got going in the second set.
Anna Blumeier contributed eight kills, a team high three aces, 12 digs and five blocks.
Danielle Jackson came away with six blocks, while coming away with timely kills. The reigning MSC Defensive Player of the Week
Juliet Banks, notched a team high 28 digs and added two assists.
Lexi Lester had the team high in assists coming away with 28, while
Savanah Schwarz had 22.
The first set started off fast for the Bears as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead, forcing a
Kathryn Hart timeout. After the timeout, UC scored three straight off a kills by Chapman and Lackey, along with a block from Blumeier. A kill from Blumeier cut the lead to three, 10-7. Then after three errors by the Bears, kills from Jackson, Blumeier, and
Olivia Verdecchia tied the set at 13-13. Three straight kills by Chapman gave UC the lead. The Patriots would then go on a 5-1 run, featuring two kills by
Emily Prewitt, one from each Chapman and Lackey. A Chapman kill then gave UC set point, and a attacking error gave UC the set.
In the second set the Patriots would jump out to a 10-4 lead off of kills by Lackey, Prewitt, and Chapman who also notched an ace. A run by the Bears would tie the set at 13, but a 6-1 run gave UC control. The run featured aces from Blumeier and
Allyson Grava, along with kills from Prewitt, Verdecchia and Chapman, and was topped off with a block from Jackson and Blumeier. Later in the set a kill from Lackey gave UC set point, and an error from the Bears ended the set.
Shawnee State rebounded to take the third set, but the Patriots were able to rally and take set four. Blumeier started the set off with a kill, followed by back-to-back kills from Chapman. Verdecchia then notched a kill. Three plays later, Prewitt and Blumeier came together to get a block. Jackson came away with two kills and a block with Verdecchia to extend the lead to five, 14-9. Later in the set following a Cumberland timeout Verdecchia notched a kill, and back-to-back kills from Chapman ended the set and the match.
UC next matches are both on Saturday October 2 at Union for a Tri-Match. They will take on St. Andrews at 1 pm and Union at 3 pm.
