Williamsburg, KY- Facing their third opponent that was mentioned in the NAIA preseason coaches' poll, the eighth-ranked UC women's soccer team used four second half goals to defeat RV Georgia Gwinnet Friday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex. With the win, the Patriots improve to 4-0 on the year.
Georgia Gwinnett came out quick in the first half trying to apply some pressure to the Patriot defense, but Cumberlands was able to control most of the possession and was able to limit the opportunities for Georgia Gwinnett. The first half didn't see much action from either team. The teams combined for only four shots, with none of them being on goal.
In the second half, the Patriots offense got off to a hot start. Within the first 12 minutes of the second half, UC was able to notch three goals from two different players. The first goal came in the 50
th minute when
Laura Navajas Marin gave a give and go to
Ainhoa Camara, and then managed to fire the ball into the back of the net. The second goal of the half came off a very similar play in the 53
rd minute with Camara finding an open Navajas in the 18-yard box, and then Navajas flicked the ball over the head of the goalie to add to the Patriots lead. During the 56
th minute,
Olaya Blanco sent a ball to the left side to
Jillian Zurborg, who then flicked a ball over the head of the goalie that ended up in the upper right corner of the net. This is
Jillian Zurborg's first goal of the year.
Georgia Gwinnett looked to be able to cut into Cumberlands lead, but
Georgia Martell was able to make a diving save on one of Georgia Gwinnett's shot on goal attempts. UC was able to add to their lead with just minutes to go in the game.
Selena Barnett was able to dribble down the right side of the field and cross a ball right into the middle of the box.
Jenna Rockwell attempted to take a shot, but hit the crossbar.
Rylee Hardley was able to grab the rebound and fire it into the back of the net. The goal was Hardley's first of her career as a Patriot.
UC women's soccer will be back in action tomorrow at the UC Soccer Complex at 2:30, when they are set to take on RV Truett McConnell. You can catch the game live
