Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early goals help to lift the Patriots past Truett McConnell

Williamsburg, KY- The 8th ranked UC women's soccer scored two goals within a minute of each other to help them beat RV Truett McConnell 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, KY. Selena Barnett and Ainhoa Camara both tallied goals in the match.

The Patriots were able to control a lot of the possession early in the first half. They were very patient with their passes and didn't force anything early. Cumberlands first shot of the game resulted in a goal for the Patriots. In the 11th minute, Jillian Zurborg was able to dribble down the left side of the field and cross a ball perfectly into the 18 yard box. Selena Barnett was able to receive the ball and send it into the bottom right corner of the goal. This goal was Barnett's first of the season. In the 12th minute of the game, UC was able to add onto their lead. Olaya Blanco looked to send a shot towards the goal and Ainhoa Camara was able to redirect right past the goalie. Truett McConnell did out-shoot the Patriots in the first half, but UC was just able to connect on their shots and find the back of the net.

The second half was a lot of back and forth between the two teams. Cumberlands did not have a shot until 12 minutes to go in the game. Jillian Zurborg looked to have a one on one chance with the goalie, but was fouled hard from behind by a Truett McConnell defender. This set up a free kick just outside the goalie box for the Patriots. Alanna Skinner sent a set piece toward the goal and Irene Medina was able to head it in just past the goalie. This is Medina's first goal of her career. Truett McConnell looked to get on the board late in the game, but Laura Vogt was able to make some saves to keep the shutout alive.

Cumberlands has a two week break before they are set to return to play in Williamsburg, KY on September 18th when they take on Dalton State. This game will be the first double header of the season with the men's soccer team. You can watch the game live here.
