Last Minute Goal from the #14 Warriors Gives the Patriots their First Loss

Williamsburg, KY – In the Patriots first top-15 matchup of the season they fell to the #14 Indiana Tech Warriors, 3-2 in double overtime.

Hrannar Magnusson and Stephen Appiah were the goal scorers for UC, marking their first goals of the season.

UC never led the game, having to overcome single goal deficits twice in the match to push it to overtime. Cumberlands was out shot by the Warriors, 15-9 with only Magnusson getting off more than one shot across the whole UC roster.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick lead, getting a corner kick in the first minute of play. ITU used the early opportunity to get on the score sheet and knock the ball in off the well-placed corner.

The Patriots would not wait long to find their equalizer in the 16' from the right side of the field. Joel Drewery threw the ball into Liam Healey. Despite a double team on Healey, he was able to get past the defenders and feed the ball to Magnusson just inside the 18-yard box. The Olafsfjorour, Iceland native cut the ball, splitting two defenders to be one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Magnusson slid the ball into the near post to tie it a 1-1.

It looked like the game was going to remain tied at the halftime break, however the Warriors scored a goal with just over two minutes left in the opening period to have the 2-1 lead heading into the second half.

The teams traded offensive opportunities in the second half, but neither were able to push the ball across the goal line. Indiana Tech was awarded a penalty kick in the 69' due to a foul after the play, but they sailed the chance over the cross bar, unable to extend their lead.

A few minutes after the penalty the Patriots made multiple substitutions including Appiah. Right after he was subbed in, UC looked to him for the equalizer. Tommaso Ogliari was out on the left flank and sent a cross into the box. The ball went right to the six yard box, where Appiah jumped into the air, heading the ball to the far right side and into the goal.

Appiah's goal in the 75th minute was the last goal by either team in regulation, leaving the score at 2-2. With the game level, it marked the second straight match the Patriots headed to overtime.

Cumberlands did not fire a shot in the first overtime period, but Indiana Tech put three on frame. Luckily Nathan Hart rose to the occasion, making three saves to keep the game tied up. In the 93rd minute, the Warriors were on the attack and played a ball out to the left, where a shot was taken, aimed for the right side of the goal, Hart dove to his right pushing the ball out wide. The rebound was blocked by freshman, Joachim Blomsterberg and then a third shot was headed to the middle of the goal, that Hart collected.

The score remained 2-2, sending the game to 2OT. Both teams had one shot in the final ten minute period, unfortunately the one for Indiana Tech was kicked into the goal to give them the 3-2 victory with just over a minute remaining in the game.

The win for #14 Indiana Tech has them a 4-0-0 on the season and #6 Cumberlands falls to 0-1-1. The Patriots will look to rebound in their match against Union on September, 8 at the UC Soccer Complex. The game is set for a 7PM kickoff with live video found here and live stats here.
