Williamsburg, KY – Two early goals from Cumberlands were able to push the team past #25 Union for the team's first win of the 2021 campaign and hand the Bulldogs their first loss.
Hrannar Magnusson and
Rodrigo Riveros were the Patriots that got on the scoresheet in the game. It marks the first goal of the season for Riveros and the team high second for Magnusson.
Cumberlands got on the scoreboard early in the game, scoring within the first ten minutes of play. Riveros played the ball out wide to Magnusson who cut the ball inward towards his left foot. He then fired the ball into the upper 90, blasting it past the goalkeeper to put the Patriots up 1-0.
Then, just 12 minutes later Cumberlands marked the first time they tallied multiple goals in a half this season.
Joel Drewery dribbled the ball down the right side of the field. He sent a perfectly lofted ball across the six-yard box. Riveros had to dive, extending his leg out, but was able to make contact and bury the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs were held to just one shot in the first half which
Ingmar Struck was able to clean up nicely. He and centerback Joachim Bloomsterberg made their first starts of the season and were instrumental in the Patriots' victory.
Cumberlands took the 2-0 advantage into halftime, but the Bulldogs were on the attack often in the second half looking to cut into the lead. Union led the shot total in the second half 10-4, putting five on frame. Struck stopped four of them including three in the final seven minutes of play.
Struck made a great diving save to his right that was headed to the corner. Unfortunately, the ball was batted out of the goal, but stayed the box and Union was able to collect the ball and fire a shot off into the far left of the goal to cut the lead to 2-1 in 84
th minute.
The Patriots did go on to weather the storm and earn the 2-1 win, giving them their first victory of the season for a record of 1-1-1 on the year.
The assists from Riveros and Drewery were the first of their season and gave them their first points in 2021. As a team UC was 5/10 with shots on goal to shots marking the first time they had .500 or better for their shots on goal average this season.
