Bowling Green, KY – Patriots freshman
Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira continues his stellar season notching four wins and being named "King of the Stroke" in the sprint freestyle event at the Asbury Triple Distance Meet. On Monday, Gonzalez de Oliveira became just the second Patriot in program history to garner at least four Mid-South Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week accolades, the conference office announced.
Gonzalez de Oliveira tallied four wins and four national cuts over the course of the meet. The Madrid, Spain native opened the meet by edging out teammate
Enzo Esteves by 0.01 seconds to win the 50 free with a time of 21.47. It was Gonzalez de Oliveira's fast 50 free time of the season and it clipped the NAIA provisional cut.
The freshman followed that up by clocking a 47.00 to win the 100 yard free. Gonzalez de Oliveira capped off his individual performance by pulling away from the field and taking top honors in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.34. Overall, Gonzalez de Oliveria earned the title of "King of the Stroke" by eight seconds overall.
In the 200 free relay, Gonzalez de Oliveira teamed with
Enzo Esteves,
Daniel Ruiz Ramis and Julio Heck da Silva to touch the wall in 1:27.97 and win the event. UC is ranked fourth in the event in the NAIA.
Cumberlands will return to the water Saturday, January 22, when they host fifth-ranked Milligan. The meet is set to began at 12 p.m. and UC will honor their 2022 senior class prior to the start. Live video of the meet is available
