Madisonville, KY – The UC Archery team started the medal rounds with three gold medals and a runner-up finish, while earning the top-seed in three of the four individual divisions heading into the final day of competition Sunday. The Patriots leads the team standing with 38 points and hold a ten-point lead over the closest competitor.
Cumberlands top shooting during qualifying helped UC earn the top-seed in all four mixed team divisions with three of them advancing automatically to the gold medal match. In mixed recurve the duo of
Lidia Quezada and
Jacob Valentini posted a 6-0 win over Lindsey Wilson to earn the first gold medal of the tournament.
The dynamic duo of
Katie Karr and
Tyler Woosley also completed their match in the third end with a 5-1 win over the Blue Raiders to earn the gold medal. The tandem of
Madison Cox and
Elliott Cross defeated KCU to advance to the gold medal match, where they faced Union's duo of Kassidy Farris and Dakota Smith. The match was tied after the third end, however, Cox and Cross posted a 39 in the final end for the 156-155 final and the gold medal.
In the mixed compound team
Danielle Woodie and
Carson Sapp battled Union's Sarah Marrow and Lane Brandt and finished with a silver medal after falling 152-149.
The day begin with the individual qualification rounds for the bowhunter and compound division. The Patriots enter tomorrow's head-to-head holding the top three seeds in the women's bowhunter division.
Madison Cox led the way carding a 596, hitting 56 ten's and four nine's on the day. The junior opened with the best round of the day carding a 299 in round one before following it up with a 297 carding a perfect 30 in 16 of the 20 ends.
Teammate
Kaitlyn Shields and
Danielle Mullis rounds out the top qualifiers finishing second and third, respectfully. Shields tallied a 296 in each of the two rounds to finish qualification with a 592, including 52 ten's. Mullis notched a 291 in round one and followed it up with a 290 in round two for a 581 total. UC has three additional archers advance to tomorrow's head-to-head competition.
Hollyann Lewis utilized a strong second round to edge out teammate
Julia Shepherd for eighth place. Lewis and Shepherd carded a 574 and 572, respectfully.
Morgan Bussert notched a 564 to qualify 11
th.
The Patriots hold the top-seed in tomorrow's women's bowhunter division with the trio of Cox, Mullis, and Shields. UC advances to the gold medal match after receiving a bye.
Elliott Cross led Cumberlands charge in men's bowhunter as he posted a 591 with 51 ten's to place third.
Brandon Durham carded a 295 in round two to qualify sixth with a total of 588, while
Hunter Larese qualified seventh with a 583.
Matthew England shot a first round 289 and finished with a 573 to edge out
Coby Hudson (572) for ninth place by one point.
The Patriots men's bowhunter team of Cross, Durham, and Larese is the second seed and will face third-seed Lindsey Wilson in the semifinals.
In men's compound, Cumberlands had five of the top eight qualifiers and all six of UC's archers advancing to the head-to-head rounds. Sapp led the way for the field after carded the best round of the day with a 298 in the final round to finish with a 592 and earn the top-seed by three points. The Patriots freshman duo of
Blaine Kostrzewski and
Cole Zeug finished in a three-way tie for fourth place after shooting a 588 with 48 ten's each. Zeug has earned the fifth-seed, while Kostrzewski will be the sixth seed tomorrow.
Aaron Adams shot an opening round 295 to propel him to a three-way tie for seventh place with a total of 585. Teammate
Tanner Barker also notched a 585 after improving on his first round score of 291 with a 294 in round two. Rounding out Cumberlands lineup is
Jase Boils, who cared a 581 to be ranked 12
th.
UC closed out qualification be placing three in the top-five in the women's compound division. Woodie came out of the gates with a 290 to be in second place after the first round, however, she closed out with a 289 to notch the top-seed with a two-round total of 579, including 39 ten's.
Madison Grimm carded a 575 with 35 ten's to finished tied for third and won a one-arrow shoot-off over Jamilee Moore of Union to earn the third seed.
Brooke Miller is in prime position to add to her conference resume after hitting 32 ten's en route to 572 and the fifth-seed.
Amanda Newland and
Marissa Harding carded a 568 each to finish tied for seventh, while
Jazmine Trinidad was one point back and earned the tenth seed.
The Patriots are the top-seed in both the men's and women's compound team rounds tomorrow.
Cumberlands will return to the range tomorrow, January 22, for the final day of competition at the MSC Indoor Championships. Head-to-head matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. ET followed by team rounds.
