Patriots Swimming & Diving Rumbles Past Buffaloes in Regular Season Finale

The third-ranked UC swimming and diving team faced one of their toughest test two weeks ahead of the MSC conference championship.  The Patriots rose to the occasion recording 11 wins in a 177-93 victory over seventh-ranked Milligan Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.

Cumberlands opened the meet with Maria Basto, Kayana Cook, Hanna te Velthuis and Anastasiia Shatalova teaming up to win the 200-medley relay.  The relay team clocked a 1:51.62 to win the event by over four seconds. 



Three Patriots recorded multiple individual wins led by Basto, who notched a team-best three first place honors and three national cuts.  The Bogota, Colombia native touched the wall in 58.97 to win the 100 back, before clocking a 2:09.75 in the 200 back pulling away from the field and winning by ten seconds.  Basto capped off her meet by beating out seven competitors to win the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.43.



In addition to her success on the relays, te Velthuis garnered a pair of individual wins in the sprint freestyle.  The sophomore clocked a 24.53 to take top-honors in the 50 free and clip the NAIA provisional standard.  Te Velthuis followed that up in the 100 free, where she earned picked up her third win of the afternoon as she went 54.03.  Shatalova finished runner-up in the event with a time of 55.23 as both times clipped the national provisional standard.



Cumberlands dominance in the freestyle continued with in the mid-distance events as Ali Pecore posted wins in both the 200 free and 500 free. In one of the closest races of the meet Pecore clocked a 1:58.56 to edge out Milligan's Maggie Blazo in the 200 free by 0.12 seconds.  That time was her first of two NAIA provisional cuts on the day as she added another one in the 500 free after posting an eight second win and finishing with a time of 5:18.01.



Isabella Cooksey led Cumberlands to a one-two finish in the 200 IM as she clocked a 2:17.08.  Alli Lovell went 2:21.15 to finish runner-up in that event. In addition to the win Cooksey added a pair of national cuts in the 100 breast (1:10.42) and the 200 breast (2:31.62). 

In her final tune-up before conference, Emma Lehmkuhl recorded a 218.45 on the one-meter board to win the event.



The Patriots close out the meet with Shatalova, te Velthuis, Pecore, and Riley Cerquiera posting a winning time of 3:39.22 in the 400 free relay.

Cumberlands closes out their dual meet season 5-0 and set their sights on the Mid-South Conference championships, which are set to begin Thursday, February 3, in Kingsport, TN.
