Madisonville, KY – The University of the Cumberlands archery team rewrote the record books as they won the Mid-South Conference Indoor Archery championship by 112 points Sunday afternoon at the West Kentucky Archery Complex. After winning three gold medals on Saturday, the Patriots added 13 gold medals on Sunday to lead the medal count with 16 gold medals and a total score of 233 points.
UC picked up where they left off Saturday night as the Patriots had three of the top-four finishes in both the men's and women's recurve bracket.
Clay Weaver, who made his recurve debut Friday, earned gold in men's recurve division after going 3-0 on the day. The fourth-seed dropped the first end of the day however, rebounded with three straight ends to defeat Hunter Reading (Lindsey Wilson) 6-2, before knocking off top-seed
Jacob Valentini 6-2 to advance to the finals. In the gold medal match, Weaver face teammate
Robert Gillette and the two tied the first end. Gillette took the second and third end, before Weaver stormed back to win the next two ends forcing a one-arrow shoot-off. Weaver won the shoot-off to capture the gold medal, while Gillete runner-up finish was his first individual MSC podium finish.
Gillette notched a 6-4 win over Christian Blair in the quarterfinals, before blanking Lindsey Wilson's T Sanchez in the semifinals. Valentini completed the Patriots podium sweep with a 6-2 win over Sanchez in the bronze medal match.
The excitement continued into the women's recurve division as once again the gold medal match featured a pair of Patriots.
Lidia Quezada and
Ceridwyn Salyers both opened the day with a pair of wins, including a 6-2 win in their respective semifinals to advance to the championship match. In the gold medal match, Salyers took an early lead leading 5-1 after the third end. Quezada responded by winning the fourth and fifth end by one points each to force a shoot-off. It was the top-seed Quezada that won the shoot-off for the gold medal, while Salyers earned the silver.
Whitney Vandiver placed fourth in the division to earn five points.
After earning the top-seed in men's barebow by 84 points,
Tyler Woosley continued to roll all the way to a gold medal. The Leitchfield, KY native didn't surrender a point as he outscored his competition 18-0, including a 6-0 win over Jacob Cook of Lindsey Wilson in the gold medal match for his first individual conference title.
Elijah Crawford rattled of six straight points to overcome a four-point deficit to earn the bronze medal with a 6-4 victory.
Katie Karr earned her second straight individual gold medal this season in the women's barebow division. After winning her opening match, Karr needed two points in the fifth end to advance to the semifinals, where she defeated Sara McCarthy (LWC) 7-3. Karr found her rhythm heading into the gold medal as she blanked Chondani McKenna-Vega (LWC) 6-0 earn her second gold medal of the weekend.
Cumberlands depth in the women's bowhunter division was on full display this weekend as UC earned the top three-seeds during qualifying. After four rounds of shooting the Patriots swept the podium as
Kaitlyn Shields posted a record a perfect to defeat
Madison Cox in the gold medal match 150-148. It marks Shields first individual conference title of her career as she averaged a 149 over the four rounds. Cox earned her fifth individual podium finish at the conference championship, while
Danielle Mullis tallied a four-point win over Ela Smallacombe of Union, 145-141 in the bronze medal match.
Another conference milestone occurred in the women's compound division, where UC had three archers advance to the medal rounds.
Makenzie Murphy, who entered as the 14
th-seed knocked off third-seed
Madison Grimm 146-141 in the opening round before posted a one-point win over Ashley Coffing to advance to the semifinals. The freshman beat teammate
Jazmine Trinidad 143-140 to reach the gold medal match where she defeated Ashlyn Scriven 142-140 for the conference title. Murphy becomes the highest-seed to win an individual gold medal in conference history. In the bronze medal, match
Marissa Harding, who was the ninth-seed, defeated Trinidad 144-139 as the Patriots collected 21 team points from the division.
The individual shootdowns wrapped up with
Brandon Durham garnering a bronze in the men's bowhunter division, while
Blaine Kostrzewski posted a fourth-place finish in men's compound.
The Patriots collected seven gold medals and a bronze medal in the team rounds. The women's barebow trio of Karr,
Sierra Gray and Kimberly Wheat defeated Lindsey Wilson in a shoot-off to advance to the gold medal match against KCU. UC earned a pair of points in ends one and four for the 5-1 victory.
Both of Cumberlands men's and women's recurve teams entered as the top seed and defeated Lindsey Wilson 5-1 and 6-0, respectfully to finished atop the podium. In women's bowhunter, the trio of Cox, Mullis and Shields posted a near flawless round to defeat Union 237-230 in their gold medal match.
In the final event of the championships, the men's and women's compound team rounds, Cumberlands added two more first-place finishes. Kostrzewski,
Carson Sapp, and
Cole Zeug beat Lindsey Wilson 235-225 in the semifinals before shooting a 28 in the final end to win the gold medal 235-234 over Union. On the women's side, Grimm,
Brooke Miller, and
Danielle Woodie were tied with Union heading into the final end but the trio carded a 57 in that end for the one point win over the Bulldogs and the 16
th gold medal of the championship.
UC set conference records for most gold medals in a championship (16), most points scored in a championship (233), and largest margin of win (112 points). Cumberlands also extended their lead in the overall team standings for the MSC title to four points over Lindsey Wilson.
The Patriots will now set their focus on the USA Archery Indoor National Championships, which takes place February 11-13 in Kennesaw, GA.
