Loudon, TN – Entering as the fourth-seed, the #19 ranked UC women's golf team opened the day with a 4-1 win over (RV) Midway, before falling to #3 Dalton State on the first day of competition at the Eagles Match Play Invitational Monday afternoon at Tennessee National Golf Course.
The Patriots squared off with Midway in the quarterfinals, taking three of the five matches by multiple strokes.
Emily Allen got UC on the board with a 5 & 4 win over Sydnee Beard to take a 1-0 lead. After starting on hole 13, Allen won hole 16 to force a tie. The match was tied three more times until Allen won five straight holes to move to 5up.
Elena Hortian defeating Cameron Allen 4 & 3. The match was tied seven times, before Hortian took four the final five holes on the front nine to secure the point and extend the Patriots lead to 2-0. Midway cut the lead to 2-1, however,
Maria Neira tallied a 2 & 1 win over Bree Russell to clinch the match for Cumberlands. After being down two early Niera went on a five-hole streak to move to three up after hole three. Neira never surrender the lead from that point as a tie on hole 11 secured the win.
In the tightest battle of morning
Ginevra Capo squared off against Emilie Hill. The duo tied on 17 of the 18 holes in the match with the difference coming on hole one as Capo won the hole to earn a point for the Patriots and the 4-1-0 final.
With the win UC advanced to the semifinals against top-seed and third-ranked Dalton State. The Roadrunners got the best of the Patriots dropping UC into the third-place match.
The Patriots will return to the links Tuesday, October 11, for the final day of the Eagles Match Play Invitational. Cumberlands will face the loser of Milligan and Loyola in the third place match at Tennessee National.
