Bowling Green, KY- For the first time in her career, senior
Laura Navajas earns Mid-South Conference defensive player of the week after her performances this week against #6 UT Southern and #14 Cumberland Tennessee. The Patriots brought home two wins against the ranked opponents, bringing their overall record to 10-0-3.
Navajas was awarded defensive player of the week after playing a pivotal role in each match. The senior was impactful on both sides of the ball to help keep UC's undefeated record. In the first match of the week against sixth-ranked UT Southern, Navajas was involved in almost every play. During the first half of the match, Navajas was fouled within the box allowing the team to get a penalty kick, which tied the game 1-1. Towards the ends of the half, she connected with
Jayden Boelter on a give-and-go for the go ahead goal making the score 2-1.
So far this season, Boelter and Navajas have connected six times for a Patriot goal. The senior holds the career assist record with 36, a record she broke earlier in the season. During the second half of the match, Navajas played a key role in the UC defense that held the Firehawk offense to their lowest shot count of the season.
The senior also contributed in a big way during the second match of the week against #14 Cumberland Tennessee. She put the Pats ahead early with a ball sent into the bottom corner of the goal, past the Phoenix goalkeeper. The senior continued to play a crucial role on both sides of the ball to help lead the team to a 3-1 victory.
Navajas has been an essential part of the undefeated Patriot team as they have taken down seven top-25 opponents and recorded seven shutouts. Cumberlands is set to take the pitch again October 12
th against #19 Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, KY.
