Patriots Drop First MSC Match to the Blue Raiders

Columbia, KY - Despite outshooting Lindsey Wilson, 23-21, #14 UC men's soccer team fell 2-0. This marks the first loss in conference play for the Patriots dropping their MSC record to 4-1-2.

Cumberlands came out of the gates firing. The team recorded five shots before the Blue Raiders recorded one. However, none of the shots in the first half were marked as on goal. Four of UC's 10 shots in the first half were blocked by LWC, including a header by a defender at the goal line to keep the game at 0-0.

Pablo Vazquez made seven saves in the game, including three key stops in the first half, but Lindsey Wilson was able to score in the during the 37th minute off a cross to go up 1-0.

In the second half, Cumberlands rattled off even more shots than the first half with 11, however they were unable to convert any into goals. Hrannar Magnusson was the first player from either team to record a shot on goal in the second half. Just seven minutes into the period Magnusson took a shot that the LWC goalkeeper had to make a diving save to stop.

Two of UC's best chances came from free kick opportunities jut outside the 18-yard box. The first free kick was inches away from being called a penalty kick in the 57'. Rodrigo Riveros stepped up to take it. He had a well struck ball that went jut left of the goal. The second one game in the 86' minute, that Vazquez came up to take. His shot sailed just to the right of the frame.

The Blue Raiders doubled their lead in the 68' from an own goal by the Patriots, going up 2-0. After the goal both Magnusson and Shuma Sasaki tested the LWC goalkeeper with shots on frame, but he was up to the task both times solidifying the 2-0 Lindsey Wilson victory.

The loss ends UC's unbeaten streak of nine straight games, which ties the record they held a season ago. The two goals against were the most Cumberlands has given up in a single game this season.

The Patriots will return to action on October 15 when they head to Campbellsville, KY to face the Tigers for an 8PM ET kickoff.
