Last Minute Goals From the Pats Secures Win Over Thomas More

Crestview Hills, KY- Competing for the first time as the No. 3 team in the NAIA, the Cumberlands Patriots brought home another Mid-South Conference win against Thomas More. UC went up 2-0 against the Saints late in the game to maintain their undefeated record as they improve to 13-0-3 overall and 8-0-1 in conference play.

In the first half, the Pats dominated offensively leading Thomas More 7-1 in shot attempts, and forced a number of turnovers. Abby Baker lead the way with four shot attempts, three of which were on goal. In the 32rd minute, a turnover by Thomas More forced a drive by Baker up through the 18-yard box. The forward fired a shot from the ground but the ball hit the right side of the crossbar, maintaining the -0-0 tie.

Just moments later, Amalia Wichmann passed the ball from the defensive half up to Baker, who headed it up to Navajas. With one touch she fired a shot from inside the 18, but it was just high of the goal.

Despite not being able to score a goal in the first half, the Patriots controlled possessions for the majority of the 45 minutes. Selena Barnett had multiple crosses into the box that were just inches from finding her teammates. The Patriot defense held Thomas More to one shot that came from a free kick on the left side.

In true Patriot fashion, the offense came out strong in the second half. Goals from Carola Fontan and Amalia Wichmann came in clutch as UC secured their 13th win of the season.

In the 75' Cumberlands put themselves on the board with a goal from Carola Fontan. After Selena Barnett saved the ball from nearly going out of bounds, and booting it to Baker from just inside the 18, Baker takes a shot that hits off the left goalpost. Off the goalpost, Fontan takes possession, beats a defender and the goalkeeper to knock the ball into the back of the net putting the Pats up 1-0.

Cumberlands scored an insurance goal in the 88th minute off the boot of Wichmann who took a free kick from 51 yards out. The ball went soaring over the field, over the goalkeepers head and into the upper left 90 of the goal putting the Pats up 2-0.

During the match, Cumberlands outshot the Saints 18-6. The Saints had four shots on goal, each saved by Georgia Martell for a SV% of 1.000.
