Hollensted Lifts Patriots Past Firehawks For the 1-0 Victory

Williamsburg, KY – The #13 Patriots extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches following a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Southern at the UC Soccer Complex. Cumberlands improves to a 7-2-2 overall record and remains undefeated in Mid-South Conference play with a 4-0-1 MSC record.

The lone goal of the match came from Storm Hollensted who recorded his third goal of the season. Pablo Vazquez was in goal and earned his fourth shutout of his career and the fifth for UC in 2022.

Vazquez tallied one save in the match and it came early on in the game. Just seven minutes into the match the Firehawks were on the attack. They crossed the ball into the box and fired a shot that Vazquez had to dive at and punch away to keep the game level. The opening half saw seven shots total from both teams with each recording one on frame.

The second half started and it was all UC from the jump. The Patriots fired off eight shots before the Firehawks recorded one. Cumberlands nearly went up 1-0 in the 57' when they had close range shots. Tiago Duarte followed up Karl-Emil Andersen's attempt at goal, but UTS' keeper stretched out to keep the ball out of the net.

Cumberlands found their opening and eventual game winner in the 70th minute from Hollensted. UC was on the attack, Stephen Appiah recorded a shot that was blocked, but UC retained possession. The ball eventually found Hollensted, who was trying to cross the ball into the box from outside the 18-yard box. His shot went past the defense and untouched to go into the side netting for the goal.

The Patriots had lockdown defense the rest of the game only surrendering five total shots. The defensive play of Joachim Blomsterberg, Bruno Garcia, Tommaso Ogliari and Hrannar Magnusson kept UC Southern at bay all game long.

UC will continue their home stretch when they host (RV) Cumberland U on Saturday, October 8 for a 7PM ET kick-off.
