Williamsburg, KY – The #13 Cumberlands men's soccer team was in a battle with the (RV) Cumberland Phoenix that ended in a 1-1 draw. The tie keeps them both undefeated in Mid-South Conference plays with equal records of 4-0-1.
The defense showed up for both teams limiting them to just seven shots on goal combined. Rodrgio Riveros was the lone goal scorer for UC picking up his fourth of the season.
One of the biggest moments in the game came in the 40' when the Phoenix were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the 18-yard box.
Pablo Vazquez remained calm and judged the CU attacker well. The ball was kicked with pace to the lower left side of the goal, but Vazquez dove to his right catching the shot for the save. He recorded two total saves in the game. The pk was the only shot on goal by either team in the first half keeping the game at 0-0 for the halftime break.
The stalemate was broken up the 67
th minute by the Phoenix. They had the ball on the right flank and were able to convert from a cross to go up 1-0.
Then, just seven minutes later, the Patriots were able to tie the game back up.
Hrannar Magnusson had the ball on the right side and crossed it through the six-yard box. The ball rolled to a Phoenix defender, but he misplayed it and Riveros came in for the tackle. The two players battled for the ball, but Riveros was able to muscle him off and slot the ball into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Cumberlands controlled possession in the final 20 minutes firing off two more shots on frame. One was by
Stephen Appiah in the 78
th minute. Appiah had his back towards goal outside the middle of the 18-yard box. He was able to turn and whip a shot around heading for the goal, but the Phoenix goalkeeper lunged up to his left to make the save.
Neither team was able to net another goal and it ended in the 1-1 score. The draw for UC pushes their undefeated streak to nine games on the season with an overall record of 7-2-3.
The Patriots will hit the road for the next three matches, starting with a trip to Columbia, KY to face Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday, October 12 for an 8:30PM ET kickoff.
