Five Players in Double Figures as the Patriots Tame the Bulldogs

Williamsburg, KY – The #24 UC women's basketball team had five players in double-figures and utilized a strong second quarter to defeat Wilberforce 81-54 for their first conference win of the season.  With the win, UC improves to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.

Jaiden Cox led the way for Cumberlands with a career-high 13 points and tied her career-high with six rebounds.  Channing Lewis notched her first double-double of the season with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 10 points.  Kaylie Monday made a season-high four three-pointers to go a long with six steals and three assists.  Kassie Monday chipped in 12 points and five assists in the win, while Destiny Haworth finished with 11 points and three rebounds. 

Wilberforce struck first with an early three-pointer, before the Patriots scored six unanswered points, including a three from Destiny Haworth to take a 6-3 lead with 7:14 remaining.  Kaylie Monday added three straight three-pointers before Kassie Monday made a steal and laid it up to make it 17-7 with 2:18 left.  Cumberlands closed out the quarter on a 6-3 run capped off by a layup from Lewis to take a 23-10 edge.

The Patriots picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 24-7.  The two teams traded buckets twice, before Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound and put it home making it 30-14 two minutes into the period.  Lakin Burke added a putback to spark a 17-2 run, that spanned almost six minutes.  That run saw six different Patriots score, including four points from Kassie Monday and Cox.  Wilberforce added a basket late giving UC a 47-17 lead at the break.

Wilberforce opened the second half on a 7-2 run cutting the lead to 49-24 midway through the third quarter.  Minutes later Caldwell found Burke in the paint for a layup, as the freshman tied her career-high with eight points in the contest.  The Bulldogs also compiled an 11-3 run, before Cumberlands netted the final seven points of the period to take a 61-34 advantage into the fourth quarter.  That run included three's from Haworth and Kassie Monday and were two of the ten three-pointers made by UC in the game.

The fourth quarter saw the two teams go a combined 25-40 from the charity stripe.  The first nine points of the period all came from the free throws until Haworth drained a shot from long range to extend Cumberlands lead to 66-41 with 6:26 left.  Cox went 5-6 from the charity stripe over the next two  minutes extending the lead to 71-44.  After each team drained a couple free throws, Joy Kendrick connected with Kaedlee Potter from downtown to make it 79-51 with under a minute left.  Cox added a layup in the closing seconds to finish with her new career 13 points and nine made free throws.

Cumberlands finished the day shooting 41.7% from behind-the-arc and outrebounded the Bulldogs 56-36.

The Patriots return to the court Tuesday, November 22, when they travel to face #18 Georgetown.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
