Pats Advance to MSC Semi-Final with 4-1 Win Over Shawnee State

Williamsburg, KY- The No. 3 ranked Cumberlands Patriots won their 9th consecutive game this evening against Shawnee State in the quarterfinal round of the MSC Tournament. Laura Navajas garnered her first brace of the season, as well as an assist to push the Pats towards a 4-1 victory.

Not even five minutes into the match, Cumebrlands had already scored two goals against the Bears. For the first time this season Selena Barnett was able to connect with the ball and notch a goal for the Patriots. Just two minutes after the horn blew, Rita Aguye Cots found herself at midfield passing the ball up to Navajas who stood 20 yards out from the 18yrd- box. Navajas, who was directly infront of the goal quickly passed the ball up to Barnett who found herself 1v1 against the Bears goalie. Barnett dodged a diving goalkeeper to tap the ball in for the first Patriot goal, putting UC up 1-0.

The Pats scored again just two minutes later off the foot of Navajas. A fast break that began at the midfield led her all the way up the goal where she notched the ball into the bottom left ninety adding to the Patriot lead and bringing the score to 2-0. Not even five minutes into the game, and Navajas had already carded an assist and a goal.

She struck again in the 10th minute of the first half.  A throw in from the Bears resulted in a turnover as Cots headed the ball up to Navajas who stood 5 yards out from midfield. Navajas moved up the field quickly, beating three defenders and kicks the ball off of her left boot into the back of the net.

At this point the Pats were up 3-0 with 35 minutes left to play in the first half. Cumberlands dominated offensively, outshooting the Bears 10-2. No additional goals were scored until the second half.

Shortly after the horn blew to being the second half, Shawnee scored their first goal of the match bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of UC. The Bears would only make three additional shot attempts during the half, each of which were saved by goalkeeper Georgia Martell.

The Patriots extended their lead in the 77th minute with a goal from Abby Baker. Baker has made her presence known on this UC offense in the past couple games, and she did the same in today's quarterfinal match. With an assist from Cots on the left side of the goal, Baker headed the ball into the net past the Bears goalkeeper bringing the score to 4-1.

The Pats outshot the Bears 17-6 during the match, with 10 shots on goal. With this win, Cumberlands secured their fourth straight MSC quarterfinal win and a shot at the semifinal game. UC will take the pitch again next week against #5 seated Campbellsville at the UC Soccer Complex.
