Patriots Suffers First Set Back in MSC Semifinals

Williamsburg, KY – Carola Fontan netted a brace, while Laura Navajas and Jayden Boelter each connected on goals but it wasn't enough as the top-seed and third-ranked UC women's soccer team fell to fifth-seed and (RV) Campbellsville 6-4 in double overtime of the Mid-South Conference semifinals Wednesday night at the UC Soccer Complex.

For Fontan, the MSC Freshman of the Year, it was her second brace of the season, both of which came against the Tigers and she added an assist in the game.  Noah Paalman and Selena Barnett both are credited with an assist as well on the day.

The Patriots took three of first four shots of the contest with two coming of frame but couldn't convert.  Campbellsville struck first with a goal in the 18' and added a second goal in the 34' minute to take a 2-0 lead.  Cumberlands battled back as Paalman was taken down in the box to set up a penalty kick.  Fontan stepped up and fired a shot into the lower right corner of goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Two minutes later, Campbellsville scored off of a free kick to take a 3-1 lead 36:53 remaining in the first half.  UC continued to press and eventually worked the ball up the right side to Amalia Wichmann, who played it to Navajas before sending it out to Barnett.  Barnett made one-touch before crossing the ball just over the outstretch hands of the Tigers keeper to Fontan, who fired it home to make it 3-2 with 3:31 left in the first half.

The Patriots came out of the break with urgency and worked the ball up the field.  Six minutes into the second half UC was able to capitalize with an equalizer goal.   Fontan played the ball forward and Navajas stepped right in front of the keeper to knock the ball down before sending it into the back of the net to make it 3-3. For the senior captain it was her fourth goal in the Patriots last three games.

Cumberlands tallied five shots and two corner kicks over the next 15 minutes but couldn't capitalize keeping the score event.  In the 70' Angeline Kieh to a corner kick for the Tigers and the ball bounced around before Agatha Nimene scored the go ahead goal putting Campbellsville in front 4-3.   UC responded two minutes later as Whichmann played a ball into the box to Paalman, who fired a shot which was saved, however, Boelter was there for the rebound and netted the equalizer to even the score at 4-4.  For Boelter, it was her 19th goall of the season, which is a career-high for the Hebron, KY native and is third most in program history. UC out shot Campbellsville 3-2 with both teams putting one shot on frame with neither converting sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Patriots were called for a hand ball in the box giving the Tigers and penalty kick.  Nimene stepped up and converted the PK to put Campbellsville in front 5-4.  Navajas took two shots in the second overtime without success before the Tigers added an insurance goal in the 109' for the 6-4 final.

The Patriots will now await the NAIA Selection Show, which is set for Monday, November 14, at 12 p.m. EST to see who they will play hosting in the NAIA First Round.  The Patriots will be hosting the First and Second Rounds of the NAIA Tournament November 17 and 19 at the UC Soccer Complex.
