Williamsburg, KY – UC advances to 21-8 as the notch their 11
th sweep of the season against Freed-Hardeman 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18). The dynamic duo of
Allyson Grava and
Anna Blumeier put in a total of 28 kills to get the win.
Grava led the Patriots with 16 kills, then Blumeier was added 12 kills of her own.
Kendall Arnold came away with 37 assists, while
Danielle Jackson added seven kills and three blocks.
Juliet Banks led the Patriots back line with 12 digs and both
Lexi Lester and
Kira Ervin put in eight digs each.
The first set started with a lot of back-and-forth action, but back-to-back kills from Grava gave the Pats a 17-15 advantage. After an
Emily Prewitt kill the Lions took the lead with a couple points. A few plays later
Mary Schneidtmiller and Jackson come together at the net for a block to tie the set at 23-23 and force a Freed-Hardeman timeout. Following the timeout, Grava put in back-to-back kills to take the set.
The Patriots found themselves trailing most of the set, but a late rally helped them take the set. Joining the action when the score was 18-13, Blumeier and Jackson put in kills along with a Lion error cut the deficit to two, 18-16. After a timeout, the Lions would go on a 4-0 run and force a UC timeout. Following that timeout, the Pats went on a 5-0 run. That run consisted of a kill from Blumeier and four Lions errors. After a Freed-Hardeman point, Blumeier tallied another kill followed by a Lions error to tie the set at 23-23. From there Jackson notched a kill and her and Grava put in a block to take the set.
UC carried that momentum from the second set into the third as they gained control early. Blumeier started the set with two kills while Grava added one to force an early timeout by FHU. A few plays later, the Pats went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-3 lead. On that run, Grava put in two kills, while Arnold and Prewitt added one kill each. Ervin also had an ace. From there, the action was back-and-forth with UC maintaining their lead. Schneidtmiller and Prewitt put in back-to-back kills to take a 21-11 lead. Three plays later Grava gave UC another point with a kill. After a few errors from both teams, Blumeier gave the Pats set and match point with a kill. Then the freshman
Jayce Braden ended the set and the match with a kill.
The Patriots will look to end their regular season with a win as they play Bethel tomorrow at 6 pm for their season finale.
