Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots closed out their season with a big win in five sets over Bethel 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-6). The dynamic duo of
Anna Blumeier and
Allyson Grava gave the Patriots at least 20 kills each.
Blumeier had a career day, as she tallied 27 kills, the most by a Patriots this season. Grava also put in 20 kills to go along with her 18 digs for her 13
th double-double of the season.
Juliet Banks came away with 19 digs and four aces, while
Kendall Arnold put in 48 assists and two aces. At the net,
Emily Prewitt had six blocks, while
Mary Schneidtmiller added five of her own.
Kira Ervin put in double figure dig numbers with 13 digs.
The first set started tightly contested but back-to-back kills from
Danielle Jackson put the Pats ahead 5-3. Two plays later, the Patriots would get three straight points from kills by Blumeier, Schneidtmiller, and Jackson to take an 8-4 lead. Later in the set, after a UC timeout Blumeier put in three straight kills to take a 22-17 lead that forced a Bethel timeout. Following that timeout, Jackson and Schneidtmiller notched a block, then a Wildcat error gave Cumberlands set point, and Blumeier ended the set with a kill.
Bethel rebounded and took set two and UC responded with a set three win. The set started with as a stalemate with the score 8-7. From there, the Pats went on a 6-0 run. Blumeier sparked the run with a kill, then Jackson and Schneidtmiller got a block, followed by an Arnold ace to force a Wildcat timeout. Following that timeout, Blumeier got another kill followed by another ace from Arnold. The next play, Schneidtmiller notched a kill to take a 13-8 lead. Later in the set, Blumeier notched back-to-back kills to get to match point and she finish off the set with a kill two plays later.
The Wildcats took set four, but it was all Patriots in set five. A Bethel error and a Grava kill gave UC the early 2-0 lead. After a Wildcat point, the Pats would score eight straight points to take a 10-1 lead. Of those eight points Blumeier had three kills while Grava put in two aces and a kill. A couple Wildcat errors would get UC to set and match point and Blumeier ended the regular season with a kill.
The Patriots finished the regular season with a 22-8 record and a 9-5 record in conference play. UC had 11 sweeps on the season and went 11-1 at home. The Pats will head to Bowling Green, KY next week on November 10
th – 12
th for the MSC Conference Tournament.
