Terre Haute, IN – The Cumberlands women's swimming & diving team won all three meets of their quad dual and achieved a season-best 21 NAIA national cuts on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots defeated Rose-Hulman 236-53, Bethel (IN) 176-107 and Hanover 239.5-10.5 on the day to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Eight Patriots achieved multiple national cuts in the meets, while UC closed out the day with ten wins.
Maria Basto and
Emma Lehmkuhl led the way for Cumberlands as they each achieved a pair of wins and two national standards on the day.
Basto shined in the backstroke taking top honors in both the 100 and 200 back. The Bogota, Colombia native pulled away from the field and clocked a 2:07.99 to win the 200 back. That time is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season and is eight seconds faster than the provisional cut. In the 100 back, Basto clocked a 58.75, which is the second fastest time in the country this season.
Lehmkuhl, the reigning MSC diver of the week, recorded a season-best score of 209.40 to win the 3-meter dive competition. That score was a five point improvement from her previous season-best and is a NAIA "A" standard. The Fort Wright, KY native also placed first on the one-meter board with a score of 189.35.
Abbey Richardson led a trio of Patriots with national cuts in the 100 breast clocking a season-best time 1:08.28.
Kayana Cook (1:08.93) and
Olie Dabney (1:10.06) also clipped the provisional cut. Richardson followed that up by touching the wall in 2:28.55 to win the 200 breast and post the sixth fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Romina Itzkovich Sacco notched a pair of provisional cuts and two performances that rank in the top-ten of the respective events. The freshman won the 200 free, clocking a season-best time of 1:57.59 to be ranked ninth, while her runner-up finish in the 200 back (2:11.02) is the tenth fastest time this season.
Valentina Zapata Ceballos and
Valentina Zapata Ceballos each finished the day with a win and a pair of national cuts. Zapata Ceballos won the 100 fly with a time of 58.92, while finishing runner-up in the 100 back clocking a time of 59.54.
Garreta Yuste led a quartet of Patriot swimmers in the 400 IM with provisional cuts as she posted a winning time of 4:47.78, which was 11 seconds faster than the standard. The Mataro, Spain native followed that up clocking a 2:16.99 in the 200 fly.
Ashley Schoenlein (4:52.57),
Isabella Cooksey (4:52.90), and
Filippa Malmstrom (4:56.85) also achieved provisional cuts in the 400 IM.
Hanne te Velthuis and
Anastasiia Shatalova accounted for UC's final individual cuts on the day. Te Velthuis notched a season-best time of 54.03 in the 100 free, which is the seventh fastest time in the NAIA. The junior also clocked a 24.95 in the 50 free to clip the standard. Shatalova touched the wall in 2:01.07 in the 200 free, which is two second faster than the cut.
In the 1000 free
Aldara Gonzalez Riano clocked an 11:12.65 to be the Patriots top finisher.
UC opened the meet with Basto, Cook, Ceballos, and te Velthuis teaming up to go 1:47.52 and win the 200 medley relay. The Patriots closed out the meet with Sacco, Shatalova, Basto, and te Velthuis winning the 400 free relay with a season-best time of 3:39.07.
Cumberlands returns to the water Saturday, November 19, when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to take on Shawnee State. The meet is slated to start at 1 p.m.
