Corbin, KY – The 14
th-ranked Patriots men's wrestling team started their season off with multiple wrestlers finishing in the top five of their respective weight class at the Pepsi Patriot Open Saturday.
In the open bracket,
Chandlar Akins,
Chasen Brown, and
Gabe Jacobs placed second in their respective weight class. Starting with Akins in the 125-weight class, after recieving a first round bye, the junior opened the day with an 8-6 decision win over Adrian Morales (Life). Akins scored six of his eight points in the first period, getting a takedown and a four-point near fall. In his second match, Akins earned a 4-2 decision over Braxton Vest (Indiana Tech) while scoring all four points in the first period behind a takedown and reversal. In the semifinal match, Akins earned his way into the finals behind a 12-11 decision win over Jack Parker (Bellarmine). Akins suffered his first loss against Dennis NcNeal, who is ranked fourth in the NAIA.
Brown received a bye in the first round in the 141-weight class, then in the second round he notched a fall in 5:00 to get his first win of the season. In the quarterfinals, Brown posted the 6-1 win over Marckis Branford (Lindsey Wilson) as he tallied a pair of takedowns, a point for an escape, and a point for riding time. In the semifinal match, he advanced to the finals by way of a injury default. In the final match, Brown fell to a 9-2 decision,
Jacobs started this year with three straight falls in the 285-weight class. His day opened with Tony Ornelas (Lindsey Wilson), who was a National Qualifier last season and notched a fall in 2:08. In the second-round match Jacobs earned a fall in 2:59 over Cumberland's River Henry. Then in the quarterfinal match, the Gulf Breeze, FL native needed just 56 seconds to earn a fall over 12
th-ranked Braydon Erb of Indiana Tech. In the semifinal, he knocked off his second consecutive ranked opponent, this time seventh-ranked Daulton Mayer (Thomas More) by a 2-0 decision after he earned his two points in the second period from a reversal. In the finals match, he took on Austin Harris (Life), who is ranked eighth in the NAIA. Jacobs started that match off strong notching a take down in the first period but ran out of steam in the third period and suffered his first loss.
Bryce Nickel wrestled in the 141 bracket as well and finished third. While,
Harold Gilmore finished in fourth place in the 184 bracket.
Patriots hits the road and travels to Des Moines, Iowa to take part in the Grand View Open next weekend on November 12. The action is set to start at 10 am EST.
