Wooster, OH – The Patriots women's swimming and diving team notched six wins on their way to retaining first place after the second day of competition at the College of Wooster Invite Friday night.
Maria Basto earned an "A" standard on her way to winning the 100 back, while Cumberlands set a new school record in the 200 yard medley relay.
Finals:
The Patriots opened the night with Basto,
Kayana Cook,
Valentina Zapata Ceballos, and
Hanne te Velthuis teaming up to pull away from the field and win the 200 medley. The quartet posted a time of 1:45.70, which broke the school record of 1:45.80 set back in 2015.
Basto dominated the 100 back, as she led the pack with a time of 56.68 to win the even by almost two seconds. That time makes her the fastest swimmer in the NAIA this season.
Valentina Zapata Ceballos clocked a time of 58.93 to place third, while
Anastasiia Shatalova touched the wall in 1:00.27 to finish fourth. Libterty Poley (1:01.84) finished sixth, followed by
Emilia Martinez Morales (1:01.93) in seventh.
Elle Hays rounded out UC's scoring clocking a time of 1:03.24 for 17
th place.
UC also picked up wins in the 200 free and the 100 breast. Starting with the 200 free,
Romina Itzkovich Sacco touched the wall first with a time of 1:53.94, that is currently the third fastest time in the NAIA.
Hanne te Velthuis came in a close second at 1:54.24, which makes her the fourth fastest swimmer in the NAIA. In the "B" finals,
Elise Weiler touched the wall in 2:04.97 to win her heat and place ninth, while
Keyleigh Hagan came home in 2:06.86 for finish 15
th.
Priscila Rodriguez Bolanos (2:10.98) came in 20
th place.
For the 100 breast,
Kayana Cook picked up the win with the tenth fastest time in the NAIA at 1:06.46, followed by
Abbey Richardson (1:07.14) who came in second, and
Olie Dabney (1:07.98) who touched the wall fourth. In the "C" final, CJ Arledge put in a time of 1:16.59 for 18
th place.
In the 400 IM, all the swimmers hit provisional cuts.
Judit Garreta Yuste led the way for UC as she finished second with a time of 4:39.66, which is the third fastest time in the NAIA.
Isabella Cooksey finished one spot back, touching the wall in 4:40.95, which ranks sixth in the NAIA.
Ashley Schoenlein clocked a 4:46.09 to finish fifth as
Jami Margolen placed 13
th with a time of 4:58.02.
Valentina Zapata Ceballos picked up a second-place final in the 100 fly with a time of 56.97, for the second fastest time in the NAIA.
Filippa Malmstrom posted the fourth fastest time in the country clocking a 57.04 to place third. Emiilia Martinez Morales (59.44) came in fifth, while Maggdalena Mayer (1:01.27) placed 11
th and
Laurel Yates (1:07.55) finished 24
th.
Emma Lehmkuhl took home first place on the 1-meter diving board. She finished with 337.35 point marking her best finish of the year. To close out the night, the team of Shatalova, te Velthuis, Itzkovich Sacco, and Basto teamed up to post a winning time of 7:49.68 in the 800 free relay.
Preliminary
Basto's 100 back NAIA "A" standard led the way for the Patriots in the morning session. She touched the wall in 56.85 seconds to earn a spot in the "A" final. The "A" final will also feature
Valentina Zapata Ceballos who hit a provisional cut as she finished in 59.56 seconds, and
Anastasiia Shatalova who touched the wall in 1:00.27 for a provisional cut. Libby Poley (1:01.25) also hit a provisional cut and
Emilia Martinez Morales (1:02.66) will also be in the "A" final, while
Elle Hays (1:05.24) earned a spot in the "C" final.
In the 400 IM prelims, three Pats earned a spot in the "A" final. Starting with
Judit Garreta Yuste who was the fastest Patriot in the event touching the wall in 4:41.75, followed by Izzy Cooksey in 4:44.71, and
Ashley Schoenlein in 4:47.23. All those times were provisional cuts.
Jami Margolen came through with a time of 5:07.48 to earn a spot in the "B" final.
The 100 fly prelims saw four Patriots make the "A" final.
Filippa Malmstrom was the fastest at 57:36 seconds, followed by Zapata Ceballos with a time of 57.93. Both
Emilia Martinez Morales (59.95) and
Magdalena Mayer (1:01.13) earned a spot in the "A" final as well. All four swimmers in the "A" final hit NAIA provisional cuts.
Riley Cerqueira swam well enough to earn a spot in the "C" final with a time of 1:05.10
In the 100-breast prelim, everyone who made the "A" final hit a provisional cut. The "A" final with feature
Abbey Richardson who went the fastest in 1:07.39,
Kayana Cook followed with a time of 1:07.75.
Olie Dabney touched the wall in 1:08.48, while Schoenlein touched in 1:10.96. Then, CJ Arledge finished in 1:16.70 to earn a spot in the "C" final.
Ending the morning session was the 200 free, where six Patriots earned a spot in the finals.
Hanne te Velthuis (1:56.39) and Romy Itzkovich Sacco (1:57.29) both hit provisional cuts and will be featured in the "A" final. While
Elise Weiler who finished in 2:04.14, and
Keyleigh Hagan (2:07.42) will be in the "B" final.
Priscila Rodriguez Bolanos earned a spot in the "C" final with a time of 2:12.50.
Cumberlands will hit the pool tomorrow morning for the final day of the College of Wooster Invite. The prelims with start at 10 am followed by diving at 2 pm, and the finals at 5 pm.
