Wooster, OH – The Patriots men's swimming and diving team notched three "A" standards, set three school records, and won six events on the way to capturing first place at the College of Wooster Invite Saturday night.
Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira,
Jokubas Jankauskas, and
Kacper Sobieszuk all notched "A" standards in their respective events for the Patriots. UC closed out their mid-season meet totaling 2119.5 points pulling away from the competition any winning by over 300 points.
Finals:
UC notched six wins in the finals today, starting with the 100 IM.
Leon Irmer became the fastest swimmer in the NAIA with a time of 50.72 for first place. The freshman also set a new program record with that swim.
Thomas Holzkamm touched the wall third in 52.61 seconds for the third fastest time in the NAIA.
Nathan Souza followed with a time of 53.30 for fourth place, while setting the fourth fastest time in the NAIA.
In the 200 back, Jankauskas dominated as he pulled away from the pack to touch the wall in 1:48.47, which is a new program record and an "A" standard. With that time, he became the fastest swimmer in the NAIA and has achieved three individual school records and a pair of "A" standards during th meet.
Filip Rybinski finished runner-up with a time of 1:52.80, followed by
Creed Farthing (1:57.07) in sixth place. Both times were good enough for provisional standards.
Gonzalez de Oliveira hit an "A" standard with a time of 44.95 seconds for first place. Not only is that time the fastest time in the NAIA it also broke the program record of 45.51, set back in 2015. In third place was Ruithiik Satti (47.00) followed by
Daniel Ruiz Ramis (47.42) in sixth place.
Mykhailo Ivaniuk (48.52) came in at 19
th, while Eli Henry (48.65) was 20
th, and
Martin Seve (49.14) was in 23
rd.
Sobieszuk pulled away from the rest of the field in the 200 fly as he touched the wall first with a time of 1:49.80. That time was an "A" Standard and is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season. Finishing in third place was
Gabriel Eriksson with a time of 1:52.98. In fifth place was Trey Wolfram (1:55.17), and in sixth place was Kuba Zaremba (1:56.92).
In the 200 breast,
Mikolaj Kala came away with the win as he finished in 2:04.37. That is the fifth fastest time in the NAIA.
Peyton Berter touched the wall second with a time of 2:05.62.
Andres Caicedo placed sixth with a time of 2:08.45, followed by
Marcos Del Vado Sanz (2:12.39) in ninth, and
Henry Wall (2:16.78) in 17
th.
In the 1650 yard free,
Will Gilbert led a trio of Patriots hitting a provisional cut with a time of 16:24.94 for runner-up finish. In third place was
Evan Hawkins with a time of 16:37.91, while
Lucca Zhigalin touched the wall in 17:04.72 for eighth place. Hawkins and Zhigalin clipped the NAIA provisional cut in their first 1650 of the season.
Brian Bedford scored 341.60 points for third place in the 1-meter board.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, the quartet of Sobieszuk, Satti, Caicedo, and Gonzalez teamed up to clock a winning time of 3:04.11.
Preliminary
In the 100 IM, all three swimmers made the "A" final. Souza finished in 53.80, followed by Holzkamm with a time of 54.03, and Irmer in 54.81 seconds. The Patriots followed that up with three swimmers hitting provisional cuts in the 200 back. Jankauskas led the way with a time of 1:50.71, Farthing was behind him with a time of 1:55.13, followed by Rybinski in 1:55.27 to earn spots in the "A" final.
Then earning a spot in the "A" finals for the 100 free was Gonzalez (45.53), Ruiz Ramis (46.94), and Satti (47.00). While Ivaniuk (48.85), Henry (49.08), and Seve (49.25) earned a spot in the "C" finals. The 200-breast prelim saw three Pats make the "A", and one Patriots in the "B" and "C" finals. Kala (2:05.59), Berter (2:06.20), and Caicedo (2:10.63) will be featured in the "A" final. While Del Vado Sanz (2:17.24) earned a spot in the "B" finals and Wall (2:21.14) earned a spot in the "C" final. All four Patriots in the 200 fly prelims will be featured in the "A" final. Starting with Sobieszuk who touched the wall in 1:53.83, followed by Eriksson who finished in 1:54.69. The other two swimmers that will be featured is Wolfram (1:55.31), and Zaremba (1:58.21).
Cumberlands ended their 2022 portion of the season with an 7-0 record. They return to the pool on January 14
th as they take on Asbury.
