Patriots Record Multiple Career Highs in Conference Win over Shawnee State

Williamsburg, KY – Jaiden Cox drained the go-ahead three-pointer with 27.3 seconds left as the #24 Cumberlands women's basketball team rallied to defeat Shawnee State 90-86 Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.  UC had four players set new career-highs in the game as the Patriots improve to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Kaylie Monday led the way for UC with a career-high 26 points, including going 6-7 from three-point range, along with seven rebounds and two steals.  Lakin Burke notched a career-high for the second straight game this time with 17 points, while Kassie Monday dished out a career-high nine assists, including one to Cox on the go-ahead bucket.  Monday added nine points in the game as Destiny Haworth chipped in 13 points, four assists and a career-high five offensive rebounds.  Channing Lewis notched her second consecutive double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.

Cumberlands won the opening tip and Kassie Monday connected with Kaylie Monday for a layup for the first bucket of the game.  Shawnee State scored four straight points before Haworth drove and dished out to Kaylie Monday, who drained a three-pointer to put UC in front 5-4.  UC went on a 7-3 run to extend their lead to 12-7 with 6:56 left in the first quarter.  A minute later, Haworth found Monday from long range again giving Kaylie Monday eight points in period.  The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until a Burke layup extended UC's lead to 22-15 with 3:00 minutes left.  Haworth tied her career-high with four assists as she found Kassie Monday from long range before adding a layup in the closing seconds as the Patriots took a 29-23 lead.

The Patriots opened the second quarter with Kassie Monday tallying a basket and dishing out an assist to make it 24-23.  Joy Kendrick dished out a pair of assists to Burke and Kaylie Monday giving UC a 38-26 edge with 6:45 remaining in the first half. Shawnee State went on a 6-2 run, over a three minute span, before Cox converted a three-point play in transition putting UC in front 43-32 with 2:32 left. Shawnee State went on an 8-5 run to close out the half as Cumberlands took a 48-40 lead into the break.

Burke netted Cumberlands first five points of the third quarter extending the Patriots lead to 53-44 three minutes in.  The Bears went on a 9-2 to pull within two points at 55-53 midway through the period. UC converted 4-6 from the charity stripe coupled with a three-pointer from Haworth to extend the lead to 62-57 with 1:32 left.  In the closing minute, Kassie Monday found Kendrick for a three-pointer before Kaylie Monday hit from long range as the Patriots take a 68-60 lead into the fourth period.

Casey Coleman pushed Cumberlands lead to ten points with a layup on the opening possession of the fourth quarter.  Shawnee State nets six unanswered points before Kaylie Monday drains her career-high sixth three-pointer of the game to make it 73-66 with 7:39 remaining.  Tanisia Murphy hit back-to-back three pointers for Shawnee State to even the score at 75-75 with 6:15 remaining.  The Bears looked to take the lead, however, Victory Fredricks tallied a block as Lewis grabbed her ninth rebound of the game.  Murphy made a layup at the 3:47 mark to give Shawnee State their first lead of the game at 77-76.  A minute later, Kaylie Monday and Kassie Monday each added a bucket to pull UC within a point at 81-80 with 2:25 remaining.  Lewis notched a steal and in the transition, Kassie Monday found Haworth in the corner for a three-pointer putting the Patriots back in front 83-81 with 1:58 remaining.  The game was tied two more times, before Kassie Monday found Cox in the corner for a three putting UC in front, 88-86 with 27.3 seconds left.  Lewis sank a pair of free throws in the closing seconds for the 90-86 win. 

The win was Cumberlands third straight victory over Shawnee State, marking the first time since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 season the UC has accomplished that feat.
