Cumberlands Drops Both Games At Day Two of NFCA Leadoff

Columbus, GA – UC faced two top opponents in (RV) Coastal Georgia and (RV) Mobile for day two of the NFCA Leadoff. Combined the two opponents had just one loss and 22 wins. UC was held to just one run across the two contests losing to the Mariners, 9-0 (five innings) and 4-1 to the Rams.

For the two games, just Katie Cheeseman and Meryn Livingston had more than one hit, with Livingston also picking up the only extra base hit on the day from a double. Emily Bryant recorded the lone RBI in the contest off a sacrifice fly in game two.

The Patriots used their whole pitching staff across the two games with Abby Whelan, Kaci Goedde, Kaiti White, and Lindsey Shope who gave up nine runs and struckout one batter. In game two Morgan Radford and Talli Burgess combined for two earned runs and four strikeouts.

GAME ONE: (RV) MARINERS SHUTOUT #22 PATRIOTS, 9-0 (5 INN)
Coastal Georgia  put up runs in the first second and fifth inning. They started the game with three runs in the first off five hits. UC looked to answer in the bottom half, getting two runners on in Cheeseman and Maddie Sickau but the pair were stranded keeping the 3-0 lead for the Rams.

The Mariners extended their lead to 4-0 in the second. With the bases loaded, White turned a double play going home to first to save another run from crossing the plate.

Cumberlands kept the CCG at bay for the next two innings, but in the fifth Mobile added five runs. They recorded five hits, including a double and capitalized on an error from UC to go up 9-0.

With two outs, Taylor Green came in to pinch hit. She got on base with an infield single, marking her first hit of the season. However, she was stranded on base, giving the Rams the 9-0 run-rule victory. This marks the first time UC has been run-ruled in a game since May 5, 2019 against Campbellsville (9-0).

GAME TWO: (RV) MOBILE DEFEATS #22 PATRIOTS, 4-1
Once again the opponents scored in the first inning against UC. They got issued a leadoff walk and utilized a sac bunt and an infield single to go up 1-0.

Then the Rams added another run in the third to go up 2-0 off a pair of hits. Their final two runs in the game came in the fourth inning from two hits and two errors.

Cumberlands answered back with a run, Cheeseman led off with an infield single. She was moved over to second base from a single off the bat of Paxton Hoop. Livingston brought around Cheeseman with a single to left field making the score 4-1.

The Patriots got one more hit in the game from Emily Jasper in the fifth, but they could not muster up any more runs, losing their second game of the day, 4-1. With the two losses UC drops to 10-5 on the season.
