Kingsport, TN – The third-ranked Patriots men's swimming & diving team recorded a pair of school records to go along with five wins on the first day of competition at the Kingsport Aquatic Center Thursday night. Cumberlands tallied 252 points to take a commanding 76 point lead in the team standings.
The Patriots opened finals in record setting fashion as UC broke both the school and conference record in the 200 free relay.
Enzo Esteves,
Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira,
Daniel Ruiz Ramis, and Julio Heck da Silva clocked a 1:22.32, which is over a second faster than the school record of 1:23.47 set back in 2017. That mark is also the second fastest in the NAIA this season.
After helping set the relay record, Esteves added his second school record of the day when he clocked a 20.11 in the finals of the 50 free. That time is tied for the fastest time in the NAIA this season and breaks the previous school record by 0.39 seconds.
Heck da Silva placed runner-up in the 50 free going 20.73, while Ruiz Ramis finished seventh with a time of 21.39.
Creed Farthing added points in the consolation heat going 21.66.
The day begin with
Nick Davis earning gold on the one-meter board to score 20 points for the Patriots.
UC took three of the top four spots in the 500 free led by
Martin Herion, who posted a winning time of 4:36.43.
John Morgan McDonald added a runner-up finish with a time of 4:37.60, while
Mikolaj Kala clocked a 4:42.82 to place fourth.
Charles Wolfram won the consolation heat touching the wall in 4:53.53.
The 200 IM featured a pair of Cumberlands swimmers reaching the podium.
Andres Caicedo dropped three seconds off his previous season-best time to go 1:52.97 and finish atop the podium.
Kacper Sobieszuk edged out
Peyton Berter for the bronze medal as the swimmers clocked a 1:54.35 and 1:55.97, respectively.
Jakub Zaremba went 1:59.00 to finish sixth, while
Nathan Souza (1:58.45) and
Elijah Henry (2:03.78) scored in the consolation heat.
Lindsey Wilson is in second place with 176 points, while Campbellsville's 115 points have them in third place.
The Patriots will return to water Friday for the second day of the MSC Championship. Prelims are set to start at 10 a.m. with finals taking place tomorrow night beginning at 5:30 p.m. Live video of the event can be found
