Patriots Women’s Lacrosse Open Seasons in Dominating Fashion

Williamburg, KY – The second-ranked women's lacrosse team had nine different players net at least one goal as the Patriots defeated Shorter 20-3 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  It marks the seventh consecutive season that UC has won their season opener.

Stephanie Meyer led the way for the Patriots with a career-high six assists and eight points to go along with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.  Bella Ricchiazzi and Katie Wharton each tallied four goals and an assist, while Aleyah Belton and Reegan Hensley recorded their first hattricks of the season.

Cuberlands notched the seven goals of the match, lead by Ricchiazzi finding Whaton at the 11:22 mark of the first quarter.  Four different Patriots accounted for goal over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 5-0.  Trinity Brown won consecutive draw controls as What and newcomer Belton worked to extend the lead to 7-0 with 3:17 remaining.  The Hawks cut the deficit to 7-1 with the final goal of the first quarter. 

UC took advantage of Shorter penalties as RIcchiazzi and Hensley each tallied a man-up goal to open the second quarter.  After the two teams traded goals, Meyer notched UC's third man-up goal of the quarter extending the lead to 11-2.  Brown forced a Hawks turnover and on Cumberlands possession Marisa Helsten put a well-placed shot into the cage for her first collegiate goal, giving the Patriots a 12-2 lead at the break.

Cumberlands outscored Shorter 5-0 in the third quarter with a pair of goals coming from Ricchiazzi, while Brown added her first goal of the season.  Wharton added two goals in the final period, while Brooke Ollrenshaw scored UC's final goal at the 3:02 mark for the 20-3 final.

The Patriots will return to the field on Tuesday, February 15, when they host Brenau.  The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start time.
