Mobile, AL – The Patriots end opening weekend with a 3-1 record. 11
th ranked UC was able to takedown Midway in walk-off fashion as
Ryan Shavers came up big, notching an RBI single in the bottom of the 8
th. They then suffered a 2-1 loss against Mobile too close out the weekend.
In the first game,
Walter Hernandez got the start and pitched 3.2 innings allowing six hits, six earned runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
Chuck Bronson also came in and pitched 2.0 innings giving up two hits zero earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Chipper Korbacher came in at the top of the 8
th and got the win.
Sujel Arias went 3-3 with three runs and two RBIs while
Shane Jones went 3-4 with three RBIs, a double and a triple.
Sean Cheely came away with three stolen bases.
UC found themselves down 2-0, heading into the bottom of the 1
st.
Ray Villanueva got the first hit as he doubled down the left field line. Then a single from Arias would bring home Villanueva, to cut the lead to 2-1.
After the Eagles extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the 3
rd, the Patriots responded in the next half inning. Cheely got walked then stole second, to put himself in scoring position.
Raphy Almanzar would then single to left field, which would bring Cheely home. Two batters later,
Carlos Muniz singled to left field bringing two runs home to take a 4-3 lead.
Midway tallied 8 runs over the next three innings to take the lead, while UC scored three making it an 11-7 game heading to the bottom of the 7
th. With the game on the line, Arias would get walked, then Muniz would single to left field. Shavers would then get hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones would hit a clutch triple that would bring home three runs to cut the lead to 11-10. After Midway changed pitchers,
Luis Alvarez would hit a single through the right side to bring Jones home to tie the game at 11.
In extras, UC would execute an incredible double-play to end the top of the eighth. Midway would lineout to Cheely in left field, the runner on third tagged then got thrown out at home after a relay from
Candido Encarnacion. Then in the bottom of the 8
th, with two Patriots on base, Shavers would get his walk-off single sending Arias home for the 12-11 win.
In the final game of the weekend,
Hunter Rigsby got the nod to start and pitched 4.0 innings allowing only one hit, zero runs, two walks with eight strikeouts.
Corey Linz got his first appearance of the season and pitched 2.1 innings allowing five hits, two runs, four walks, and five strikeouts.
This low scoring game had UC's only run come in the top half of the 1
st inning. Arias singled up to left field, to bring Almanzar home. The Rams tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 5
th. Then in the bottom of the 7
th, Mobile got a walk-off single to give the Patriots their first loss.
Cumberlands will host Cincinnati-Clermont on Tuesday Feb 9 for a double-header starting at 2 PM. This will be their home opener. For
