Williamsburg, KY – Facing their second consecutive top-five opponent, the fourth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome an offensive onslaught falling to fifth-ranked Indiana Tech 12-3 Friday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Warriors improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Patriots move to 4-1.
Nik Kubik led the way for the Patriots going 17-22 on faceoffs with eight ground balls, while
Jake Morgan recorded five caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
Tate Crowell and
Jacob Bush combined for five caused turnovers and pair of ground balls.
Dylan Crouch added three points as
Christian Vanover and
Thomas Fogarty tallied two points ech.
It was a defensive battle right from the start as
Will Settle made a pair of saves as UC's offense struggled to get into an offensive rhythm through the first eight minutes of the first quarter. Indiana Tech struck first with a goal at the 3:58 mark with a goal from Samuel Bodley. Indiana Tech added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead after the opening period.
Nik Kubik went 4-4 on faceoffs in the period to help UC control the possession.
Nik Kubik opened the second quarter winning the faceoff and scooping the ground ball. The grad student raced up field and found
Dylan Crouch, who faked high before netting UC first goal of the game, six seconds into the quarter. Indiana Tech has netted a pair of goals, before the Patriots utilized quick passes as Vanover found Crouch for a goal cutting the deficit to 5-2 with 6:24 remaining. The Warriors added three more goals over the closing minutes of the quarter to take an 8-2 lead into the break.
Indiana Tech continued their strong performance adding four goals in the third quarter to take a 12-2 lead with 6:34 remaining. Cumberlands continued to battled as they forced a turnover near midfield and on the ensuing possession Crouch found Vanover for a goal to make it 12-3 after the third quarter.
UC looked to cut into the deficit as Fogarty connected with Kava, who put a one-time into the cage making it 12-4 with 11:09 remaining. Minutes later, Fogarty connected with
Dawson Coltran for a goal to cut it to 12-5 with 3:00 left. Indiana Tech added a goal in the closing minute for the 13-5 final.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, March 18, when they travel to Laurinburg, NC to face second-ranked Keiser in an AAC neutral site matchup.
