Patriots Men’s Swimming Closes Out Season Ranked Third

Coming off their highest finish at a NAIA National Championships, the UC men's swimming & diving team is ranked third in the postseason NAIA Coaches' Poll, announced by the national office Friday.  Cumberlands scored 335 points at the championships, which was the most points since the 2008 championships.

The Patriots had 15 swims that placed in the top eight of their respective events earning All-American honors.  Four UC swimmers earned multiple individual All-American honors led by Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira, who was a three-time selection.  The freshman tallied a runner-up finish in the 200 free clocking a time of 1:39.42, which is the second fastest time in program history.  Gonzalez de Oliveira notched a pair of sixth place finishes in the 100 free (45.70) and the 200 IM (1:51.28).

Mikolaj Kala broke the school record in the 200 breast as touched the wall in 2:01.74 to finish fifth at the championships.  The Bytom, Poland native also went 56.24 in the 100 breast to finish seventh.

Kacper Sobieszuk and John Morgan McDonald tallied a pair of All-American honors each.  Sobieszuk tallied a third place finish in the 200 fly and an eighth-place finish in the 200 IM, while McDonald placed fifth in both the 500 free and the 1650 free.  McDonald went through the 1,000 in 9:41.09 to set a school record en route to his finish of 16:02.07.

Enzo Esteves notched UC's final individual All-American honors as he went 20.28 in the 50 free to place fourth overall.  Esteves set the program record in this event earlier this season.

Cumberlands had all five of their relays earn All-American honors as the each placed in the top-six at nationals.  The Patriots 200 free relay and the 800 free relay each broke the school record as the UC finished third in the 200 free relay with a  time of 1:22.99, while the 800 free relay went 6:50.68.

The Patriots closed out the season with a 6-0 dual meet record before capturing their third straight Mid-South Conference title.
